Dakota Johnson received a special, albeit slightly reluctant, visit from Patient Zero during her latest hosting stint on Saturday Night Live, anchoring an episode packed with surprise pop culture crossovers, political satire, and self-deprecating humor.
Taylor Swift made a surprise appearance alongside the Verity actress during her opening monologue on Saturday night, marking a memorable cameo for the live sketch comedy show. Taking the stage for her third time hosting SNL, Johnson joked about her romantic history since her previous hosting appearance, telling the audience she has experienced “two very public, very lame breakups with two very awesome musicians.” She added that she is fortunate to have supportive friends who “don’t judge me for dating these men.”
That cue brought out Swift to a wave of applause from the Studio 8H audience. Johnson playfully introduced the global pop superstar as “my literal therapist,” a characterization that Swift quickly challenged on stage.
“I’m not your therapist,” Swift retorted. “Actually, you just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some.”
“Yeah, well I have manners,” the actress fired back.
Swift continued the comedic banter, describing their routine: “And then you flop on my couch and overshare, and every so often I just say, ‘Damn, that’s crazy.’”
“Is that not a therapist?” the Fifty Shades of Grey star questioned in response.
The comedic bit tied directly into Swift’s musical releases over the weekend. On Sunday, Swift dropped the official music video for her new single “Patient Zero,” which stars Johnson and actor Colin Farrell. The visual and the track debuted at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. The song is one of four new tracks featured on The Life of a Showgirl: Encore Edition, which was released last Friday.
Bringing her monologue to a close, Johnson leaned further into her running joke about musicians. “Well, just quickly, while we’re on the subject of musicians, I think actually I’m doing a public service by dating them, because ladies, I am saving you a lot of money on Zoloft. So, you’re welcome, America! And also England and parts of Ireland and Cleveland, allegedly,” Johnson quipped, prompting Swift to chime in with an enthusiastic, “Woo-woo!”
The mention of Cleveland served as a direct reference to another new track from Showgirl: Encore, in which Swift sings about her husband, Travis Kelce, and their life together. “Now I’m wearing white, so hate all you like / This is the love of my life,” Swift sings on the track, cementing the personal theme of the extended album edition.
Earlier in her monologue, Johnson addressed the commercial performance of her 2024 film Madame Web, wryly noting the connection to her last time hosting the NBC sketch series in January 2024. “The last time I was here, I was promoting a movie called Madame Web,” Johnson told the audience. “And tonight, I’m still promoting it. Because the movie hasn’t made any money yet.”
Beyond the monologue, the episode featured a topical cold open that gathered a lineup of prominent political figures to film campaign advertisements ahead of the midterms. The sketch featured Marcello Hernández stepping into the role of Marco Rubio, Mikey Day portraying Mitch McConnell, and Jeremy Culhane appearing as J.D. Vance.
Colin Jost also made an appearance in the sketch as Pete Hegseth, holding a non-alcoholic beverage and leaning into satirical framing of military leadership. “Now listen up, OK, ‘cause I need all you patriots at home to do the gayest thing ever and vote,” Jost’s Hegseth declared during the segment. “Thanks to me, the military finally has its priorities — and sexuality — straight.” The cold open eventually culminated with the entrance of James Austin Johnson as Donald Trump.
Saturday night’s episode marked Johnson’s third time serving as the master of ceremonies for SNL. She made her hosting debut in February 2015 and returned nearly a decade later in January 2024. Over the years, she has made several additional appearances on the program, including dropping in for the show’s milestone 40th-anniversary special and making a cameo during Josh O’Connor’s hosting stint last December.
Season 52 of SNL premiered the previous week with New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson and musical guest Katseye. Looking ahead at the current season, Shane Gillis is scheduled to host on October 10 alongside musical artist Rosalía, while Obsession star Inde Navarrette is slated to make her SNL hosting debut during the upcoming Halloween episode, featuring Gracie Abrams as the musical guest.
