Mark Wahlberg’s Next Big Swing: The Actor Bets Big on Affordable Diagnostics-Heavy Wellness with Municipal Gyms

Mark Wahlberg has built and backed numerous companies throughout his multifaceted career, spanning apparel, nutrition, and entertainment. However, as he prepares to open his latest venture this December, the Hollywood star admits he has rarely felt this level of professional enthusiasm. Stepping directly into a high-growth sector currently dominated by venture capital and luxury pricing, Wahlberg is aiming to disrupt the wellness space by bringing diagnostics-heavy, longevity-focused fitness to a much broader demographic.

Speaking with TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, Wahlberg revealed that the very first Municipal Gym is scheduled to open its doors this December just outside Las Vegas. Spanning an expansive 32,000 square feet, the sprawling club is designed to be much more than a traditional weight room. The facility is equipped with comprehensive health diagnostics, including routine blood work and epigenetic testing, alongside advanced recovery gear, compression therapy, and cold plunges. It even features an on-site café serving protein muffins and other health-conscious options.

Rather than positioning the club as an exclusive sanctuary for the ultra-wealthy, Wahlberg is pitching Municipal as an accessible alternative to the burgeoning market of longevity clubs. While existing high-end wellness centers frequently charge tens of thousands of dollars annually for similar preventative health services, Wahlberg maintains that his gym will offer a comparable, if not superior, level of results at a fraction of the cost. For instance, he highlighted a sample offering where members could receive three rounds of comprehensive blood work and a one-on-one consultation with a physician to identify genetic predispositions for just $99, with access to supplements and hormone therapy seamlessly integrated into the ecosystem.

This ambitious fitness club represents the logical evolution of a broader commercial strategy that first took root seven years ago with the launch of a casual sportswear line. The Municipal clothing brand officially debuted during the COVID-19 pandemic—a timing that Wahlberg readily acknowledges was far from ideal. Entering the apparel market in 2020 proved to be a daunting challenge, arriving precisely as major traditional retailers, ranging from J.Crew to Brooks Brothers, were forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to pandemic-related economic pressures.

The clothing brand originally grew out of observations Wahlberg made during his extensive career as a celebrity fitness spokesperson. Having collaborated with various athletic brands over the years while fielding countless inquiries from other companies seeking brand ambassadors, he noticed a recurring pattern in the proposals. According to Wahlberg, nearly every prospective partner shared the exact same limited objective: they simply wanted to sell basic T-shirts and sneakers.

Driven by a desire to exert a more meaningful and comprehensive influence on consumers’ daily lives, Wahlberg envisioned a brand that would address every facet of healthy living, encompassing what people eat, the supplements they take, their training regimens, and their physical recovery practices. Clothing was merely the starting point for this grander vision. He explained that the initial plan was to establish a foothold in the apparel space and systematically build outward from there. Reflecting on his entrepreneurial philosophy, Wahlberg noted that he only commits his time and capital to ventures that he feels passionately about and that serve as a direct extension of his personal identity and lifestyle.

Even acknowledging the notoriously brutal nature of the apparel industry—pointing to well-documented quality-control challenges faced by major athletic wear competitors like Lululemon—Wahlberg remains entirely unfazed. He views the physical retail presence of the new gyms as an organic synergy that will ultimately benefit the clothing brand by giving consumers a tangible environment where they can physically feel and touch the apparel before making a purchase. Moreover, he emphasized that physical exercise remains an indispensable cornerstone of daily life for millions of people.

The launch of Municipal Gym arrives as the broader longevity and wellness market remains intensely focused on the ultra-luxury tier. Industry players have aggressively targeted high-net-worth clients with exorbitant pricing models. For instance, Fountain Life, a longevity company co-founded by Tony Robbins and Peter Diamandis, successfully raised $18 million to expand its specialized centers, where full annual subscriptions reportedly run around $21,500. Similarly, The Estate, a company co-founded by Robbins and hospitality executive Sam Nazarian, has been mapping out plans to charge upwards of $35,000 for memberships to its exclusive wellness centers. Meanwhile, traditional fitness giant Equinox has rolled out a $36,000 longevity add-on package designed to sit on top of a standard gym membership.

Wahlberg insists that Municipal is designed to target that exact same high-end category of health optimization but with a radically democratized price point. Asserting the value proposition of his upcoming venture, he stated that the company offers a superior price point compared to competitors while delivering far more tangible results. When asked whether the new gyms would function primarily as storefronts for his existing business interests, such as his personal nutrition and protein supplement brand, Wahlberg answered affirmatively in a qualified manner. What he is truly constructing, he explained, is a comprehensive health and wellness ecosystem that provides everything a member needs from start to finish.

While Wahlberg did not disclose specific numerical targets regarding the total number of gym locations he hopes to open, he characterized the company’s long-term growth strategy as aggressive. He noted that commercial landlords and real estate developers who toured the initial Las Vegas construction site have already stepped forward to offer premium AAA locations under highly favorable leasing terms, complete with substantial tenant-improvement allowances to help subsidize the build-out costs.

Wahlberg’s extensive track record in the fitness industry might give other entrepreneurs pause. Discussing his past ventures, conversations inevitably touch upon his deep involvement with the boutique fitness chain F45 back in 2019, a period heavily documented in his reality documentary series "Wahl Street." With a touch of humor, when reminded of the incoming challenges depicted in the show, he quipped about the unforeseen arrival of the pandemic, eliciting laughter from the audience. Wahlberg had initially invested in F45, famous for its intense 45-minute group workouts, when the company commanded a valuation of $450 million. The fitness chain eventually went public in 2021, but subsequently suffered a dramatic stock collapse that led to its eventual delisting from the New York Stock Exchange in 2023. Wahlberg candidly admits that the experience provided him with invaluable business lessons.

Reflecting on those lessons, Wahlberg noted that his primary takeaway was the critical importance of aligning exclusively with partners who share his exact operational approach and vision. He also realized over time that a traditional big-box gym model aligns much closer with his personal philosophy than boutique class formats. While high-intensity interval classes like those at F45 cater effectively to individuals facing severe time constraints, Wahlberg envisions members treating Municipal as a destination where they can comfortably spend hours utilizing a wide array of facilities. He criticized the prevailing business model used by many traditional gyms that rely heavily on a "join up but don’t show up" mentality, stating clearly that he simply cannot understand or endorse that philosophy.

The selection of the name Municipal holds profound personal significance for Wahlberg, who grew up experiencing severe financial hardship in Boston as one of nine children. His formative years were spent playing sports on public basketball courts and municipal golf courses. Reflecting on those early experiences, he noted that the blacktop serves as a harsh but effective classroom where individuals learn fundamental life lessons about winning, losing, competing, and summoning the resilience to get back up and try again after a defeat.

Wahlberg has never attempted to conceal the difficulties of his youth, which included a troubled adolescence that led to a legal conviction and a brief period of incarceration. However, he frequently credits specific figures who intervened during his teenage years to help redirect the course of his life, including Father Jim Flavin, a local parish priest who has maintained a lifelong presence in Wahlberg’s life since the actor was just 13 years old.

The actor is deeply committed to ensuring that the new gym locations reflect that same spirit of mutual support, perseverance, and community. Describing the intended atmosphere of the clubs, Wahlberg emphasized that they are designed to be spaces where people can work hard, enjoy themselves, support one another, and build a genuine sense of community that challenges individuals to become better versions of themselves. He acknowledges that the endeavor is intensely personal. Coming from next to nothing and achieving extraordinary success, Wahlberg frequently reminds himself of the responsibility he carries to inspire others growing up in similar circumstances, particularly inner-city youth and at-risk teenagers, proving that adverse backgrounds can be overcome through hard work and determination.

Now at 55 years of age, Wahlberg notes that his personal fitness goals have evolved significantly over time. While his younger years were heavily driven by the desire to maintain a specific aesthetic and look good, his daily motivations are now centered entirely on functional health and longevity. He simply wants to wake up feeling good in the morning, with the physical vitality required to conquer all the professional and personal plans he has scheduled for the day.

Currently, Wahlberg’s professional schedule is exceptionally full, balancing the preparations for the Municipal gym launch alongside a demanding film role portraying baseball legend Pete Rose and supporting his daughter’s competitive equestrian career. His anticipation for the upcoming December gym opening is so intense that he joked visiting the active construction site feels akin to literally watching paint dry. Consequently, when asked if he is currently searching for additional business ventures, Wahlberg shrugged off the notion. While he is certainly not actively hunting for his next corporate project, he quickly added that if an extraordinary opportunity were to present itself, he would naturally keep an open mind.
