SafetyWing Launches ‘Nomad Citizen’ to Fill Safety Net Gap for Global Remote Workers and Entrepreneurs

For millions of digital nomads and location-independent business owners operating across international borders, a persistent professional anxiety remains largely unaddressed: the absence of a reliable social safety net. While traditional corporate employees enjoy built-in health benefits, paid parental leave, disability insurance, and state-backed social protections, independent operators roaming the globe typically must piece together fragmented, inadequate solutions. They often find themselves paying exorbitant prices for disjointed travel and medical policies while remaining fundamentally underinsured against life’s major disruptions.

Travel insurance provider SafetyWing is attempting to fundamentally alter that reality with the launch of its new offering, Nomad Citizen. Designed as an all-in-one annual membership program, the service bridges the gap between conventional travel insurance and comprehensive domestic social benefits. By bundling robust health coverage, travel protection, income replacement, parental leave provisions, and long-term disability into a single subscription, the company aims to provide the kind of comprehensive security traditionally reserved for office-bound professionals anchored to a single country of residence.

What is Nomad Citizen?

Nomad Citizen is structured as an annual membership explicitly targeted at location-independent entrepreneurs, freelancers, and business owners who spend more than half of each year outside their home country. Operating globally without traditional residency restrictions—with the exception of Puerto Rico—the program seeks to mirror the institutional safety nets that citizens enjoy back home, but tailored specifically for individuals whose income and daily lives cross international boundaries by default.

Rather than forcing remote workers to maintain separate policies with different providers for medical emergencies, basic health care, and trip interruptions, the platform integrates these essential protections into a unified system. It is designed to function as an overarching security blanket for individuals whose lifestyle precludes them from relying on local state-sponsored welfare systems or domestic corporate benefits packages.

Who Can Sign Up?

The program is tailored for a specific demographic of high-earning, mobile professionals. To be eligible for Nomad Citizen, applicants must be under the age of 56 and demonstrate a minimum monthly income of $4,000 USD. The enrollment process is conducted entirely online, requiring members to select a start date, declare good health, and confirm that they will spend more than half of the year outside their passport country. Additionally, members have the option to include their partners and any dependent children under the age of 18 in the coverage plan.

Industry observers note that the product fills a critical niche in the modern remote work economy. Traditional travel insurance is strictly designed to handle acute medical emergencies and short-term trip disruptions, leaving a massive vulnerability for self-employed individuals who suffer long-term injuries or income loss while abroad. Incidents involving digital nomads being severely injured in traffic accidents or medical emergencies—only to exhaust their travel insurance limits and face months of rehabilitation without income—highlight the urgent need for a product of this nature.

The coverage model is particularly advantageous for individuals living in countries that lack robust social services for foreign nationals, such as Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, or France, while offering fewer practical benefits for those who maintain citizenship in nations with comprehensive state-funded welfare systems, such as Sweden.

How Much Does It Cost?

Pricing for the Nomad Citizen membership varies depending on the age bracket of the subscriber. For enrollments taking effect on or after July 1, 2026, the monthly cost is set at $443 for members aged 18 to 39. For individuals aged 40 to 49, the rate increases to $665 per month, while subscribers aged 50 to 55 face a monthly fee of $875.

For families, children can be added to the plan for $143 per month, though couples enrolling in the program are eligible to add their first child under the age of ten at no additional cost. Members are given the flexibility to pay either on a monthly basis or through an annual payment structure.

Regarding geographical coverage, the plan is truly worldwide and includes the United States. However, the company notes that the policy limits were not designed for extensive healthcare utilization within the United States, given the uniquely high costs and complex structure of the American healthcare system.

What’s Included?

The cornerstone of the Nomad Citizen offering is its income protection benefit, addressing a risk that is virtually uninsurable for cross-border freelancers through conventional financial markets. Traditional disability or income protection policies typically require a fixed employer, a permanent domestic address, and residency in a specific jurisdiction. Under the SafetyWing plan, remote workers who experience a sudden loss of income—whether due to layoffs, dried-up client contracts, or medical conditions that prevent them from working—are eligible to receive up to $4,000 per month for a duration of three to six months to stabilize their financial situation.

In addition to income protection, the health insurance component provides up to $1.5 million in annual coverage. This expansive policy encompasses inpatient and outpatient care, prescription medications, dental and vision care, mental health services, maternity care, preventive wellness treatments, and specialized therapies, offering a level of security comparable to a high-end domestic health plan.

The package also includes comprehensive travel protection covering trip delays, trip cancellations, stolen electronic equipment, lost luggage, emergency evacuations, and robbery, alongside provisions for family members to visit a hospitalized policyholder. For long-term career-ending catastrophes, such as the loss of eyesight, major strokes, or debilitating physical injuries that prevent a person from performing basic daily activities, the long-term disability benefit provides monthly payments of $4,000 up to age 75.

Parental leave is also incorporated into the structure, offering $4,000 per month to support new parents or legal guardians who need to take time away from work, subject to a three-year waiting period. To streamline the administrative burden of international living, members gain access to visa assistance through an app interface that manages communications with foreign governments for nomad-specific long-term visas.

Other integrated features include the Nomad Care Map, a database of over 4,000 vetted healthcare providers worldwide rated for service quality and English proficiency, and a proprietary prepaid debit card that allows members to pay for covered services up to $500 without waiting for traditional reimbursement cycles. These services, alongside 24/7 human customer support, are managed through a single centralized digital application.

Making Claims

Managing claims under the Nomad Citizen framework is designed to eliminate the friction typically associated with multi-policy management. For healthcare expenses, members can either pay out of pocket and submit documentation for reimbursement or contact the 24/7 support team to coordinate direct payment arrangements with the medical provider. Travel claims require standard documentation such as police reports, carrier delay notices, and receipts submitted through the app. For income protection claims, SafetyWing works directly with the policyholder to verify the income disruption and confirm that active steps are being taken to re-establish revenue streams.
