SafetyWing Launches ‘Nomad Citizen’ to Fill the Social Safety Net Gap for Digital Nomads

For the rapidly expanding global community of digital nomads and location-independent entrepreneurs, navigating the modern workforce has long come with a hidden, high-stakes trade-off. While working for oneself across borders offers unmatched freedom, it strips away the traditional corporate safety nets that traditional employees take for granted. Remote workers and solopreneurs have historically been forced to piece together fragmented policies—juggling a patchwork of basic travel insurance, sporadic private health plans, and standalone medical evacuation coverage—leaving them effectively underinsured. Furthermore, because these wandering professionals are rarely citizens of the countries they temporarily inhabit, local social safety nets remain entirely out of reach.

Recognizing this glaring vulnerability in the modern remote work economy, the travel insurance and tech company SafetyWing is rolling out an ambitious new product designed to bridge the gap. Known as "Nomad Citizen," the comprehensive annual membership package seeks to provide location-independent business owners and freelancers with an all-in-one safety net that bundles traditional health coverage, travel protection, income protection, and life insurance benefits into a single unified plan.

What is Nomad Citizen?

Tailored specifically for entrepreneurs and business owners who spend more than half the year outside their home country and whose professional lives cross borders by default, Nomad Citizen provides worldwide coverage with no residency restrictions, with the sole exception of Puerto Rico.

Rather than functioning as a standard emergency-only travel insurance policy, the membership delivers robust, continuous protection meant to mirror the comprehensive security of a traditional domestic welfare state. It addresses a reality well known to long-term travelers: standard travel policies quickly exhaust their limits during severe medical crises, leaving injured or ill freelancers unable to work for months and frequently dependent on crowdfunding campaigns to cover their rehabilitation expenses. By offering a centralized safety net, SafetyWing aims to protect high-income remote professionals living in countries like Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, or France, who lack access to local public health systems and social services.

Who Can Sign Up?

The target demographic for Nomad Citizen consists of location-independent individuals under the age of 56 who earn a minimum of $4,000 USD per month. The enrollment process is handled entirely online, requiring applicants to select their preferred start date, declare good health, and confirm that they will spend more than half of the year outside their passport country. Members also have the option to add their partners and any children under the age of 18 to the plan.

While the product is not designed for individuals living in their home countries where state benefits are readily available—such as a citizen residing in Sweden—it fills an urgent void for expatriate entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and remote-working families who bear the full financial weight of unexpected life events entirely on their own.

How Much Does It Cost?

Pricing for the Nomad Citizen membership varies depending on the applicant’s age tier. For individuals signing up on or after July 1, 2026, the monthly cost is set at $443 for members aged 18 to 39. For those between 40 and 49 years old, the rate increases to $665 per month, while members aged 50 to 55 will pay $875 per month.

Children can be added to the plan for $143 per month, though couples enrolling in the program are eligible to add their first child under the age of 10 at no additional cost. Members have the flexibility to pay on either a monthly or annual basis.

Nomad Citizen: A New Social Safety Net for Entrepreneurs

The plan is structured to provide truly worldwide coverage, including the United States. However, the company notes that coverage limits were not designed for extensive medical use within the United States, given the uniquely high costs associated with the American healthcare system.

What’s Included?

The comprehensive nature of the Nomad Citizen plan sets it apart from traditional insurance offerings by incorporating several distinct layers of financial and medical protection.

The income protection benefit stands out as perhaps the most groundbreaking feature of the package. Traditional disability insurance and income protection schemes universally require a fixed corporate employer, a permanent residential address, and verified residency within a specific country. Consequently, border-crossing freelancers and sole traders have historically been considered uninsurable against income loss through conventional financial markets. Under the Nomad Citizen plan, if a remote worker experiences a loss of income due to layoffs, dried-up client contracts, or a disabling medical condition, the policy pays out up to $4,000 per month for a duration of three to six months to help them stabilize their finances.

The health insurance component provides up to $1.5 million in annual coverage. This expansive policy covers inpatient and outpatient care, prescription medications, dental work, vision care, mental health services, maternity care, preventive health measures, and wellness therapies, functioning comparably to domestic health insurance plans.

Complementing the medical and income provisions is a travel coverage tier that handles common travel disruptions, including trip delays and cancellations, stolen electronics, lost luggage, emergency medical evacuations, robbery, and the costs associated with family visits during hospitalizations.

For family planning and long-term security, the package includes parental leave and long-term disability benefits. Following a three-year waiting period, members who welcome a new baby or become the legal guardian of a child receive $4,000 per month during parental leave, enabling them to take time off work without financial anxiety. In the event of a permanent, catastrophic disability—such as the loss of eyesight, a major stroke, a cancer diagnosis, or the inability to perform basic daily activities like walking or eating independently—the policy provides ongoing payments of $4,000 per month up to age 75.

Additional administrative and logistical tools are integrated directly into the membership platform. These include visa assistance, which allows members to browse and apply for digital nomad visas through the app interface while SafetyWing handles direct communication and quality control with foreign governments. Members also gain access to the Nomad Care Map, a database of over 4,000 vetted healthcare providers worldwide rated for service quality and English proficiency.

Financial transactions are streamlined through the SafetyWing card, a worldwide prepaid debit card sent to every member. This card can be used to pay for covered services up to $500, automatically generating a pre-paid claim to eliminate out-of-pocket expenses and waiting periods for reimbursement. All of these features—alongside 24/7 human support via live chat—are consolidated into a single application, sparing nomads the headache of managing separate health, travel, and income protection providers.

Making Claims

The administrative process for utilizing the plan’s benefits is designed to be straightforward. For healthcare needs, members can either pay out of pocket and submit a claim for reimbursement or contact the 24/7 support team in advance to arrange direct payment with the medical provider. Travel claims require standard documentation such as police reports, carrier delay notices, and receipts, which are then submitted digitally. For income protection claims, SafetyWing works directly with the member to verify the loss of revenue and confirm active efforts to re-establish income streams, ensuring that the entire lifecycle of employment, travel, and health security remains managed within a single app.
