SafetyWing Launches "Nomad Citizen" to Provide Global Social Safety Net and Income Protection for Digital Nomads

For millions of digital nomads, remote workers, and location-independent business owners operating around the globe, a familiar anxiety looms beneath the freedom of roaming the world: the complete absence of a safety net. While traditional corporate employees enjoy built-in health plans, paid parental leave, disability insurance, and government-backed social safety nets, self-employed global wanderers are left to piece together fragmented policies. Typically, they juggle separate travel insurance packages and basic medical plans while remaining entirely uninsured against loss of income. Because they are not citizens of the countries they temporarily inhabit, they cannot access local public benefits either.

Recognizing this critical gap in the modern remote workforce, the travel insurance company SafetyWing has launched a comprehensive new product called Nomad Citizen. Designed specifically for location-independent entrepreneurs whose lives and earnings cross borders by default, the annual membership aims to bridge the divide between basic travel protection and the robust safety nets traditionally tied to fixed residency.

What is Nomad Citizen?

Nomad Citizen is structured as an all-in-one annual membership that bundles global health coverage, comprehensive travel protection, income protection, and life insurance benefits into a single unified plan. It is tailored specifically for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and business owners who spend more than half of the year outside their home country.

The policy provides worldwide coverage with virtually no residency restrictions, excluding Puerto Rico. For digital nomads who move fluidly between countries in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and Europe without establishing permanent roots, the product offers a cohesive alternative to managing multiple disjointed policies across different providers.

Who Can Sign Up?

To qualify for Nomad Citizen, applicants must be under the age of 56 and earning a minimum of $4,000 USD per month. The enrollment process is handled entirely online, requiring users to select their start date, declare good health, and confirm that they will spend more than half of the year outside their passport country. Members also have the option to add their partners and any children under the age of 18 to the plan.

The introduction of this product addresses a stark reality frequently faced by long-term travelers. Industry observers note that while standard travel insurance adequately covers sudden emergencies, it quickly falls short when a nomad is sidelined by a severe injury or illness that prevents them from working for months. Without sick leave or disability benefits, injured remote workers have frequently been forced to rely on crowdfunding campaigns to cover medical debt and basic living expenses during rehabilitation. Nomad Citizen is intended for individuals living outside their home countries who lack access to robust social services—such as those residing in Thailand, Mexico, Indonesia, or France—rather than citizens who already enjoy comprehensive state-backed benefits in countries like Sweden.

How Much Does It Cost?

Pricing for the Nomad Citizen membership varies by age group. For members signing up on or after July 1, 2026, the monthly cost is $443 for individuals aged 18 to 39. For those between the ages of 40 and 49, the rate increases to $665 per month, while members aged 50 to 55 pay $875 per month. Children can be added for $143 per month, though couples on the plan can enroll their first child under the age of 10 at no additional cost. Subscribers can choose between monthly and annual payment structures.

Regarding geographic coverage, the policy is truly worldwide and includes the United States. However, the company notes that coverage limits were not designed for extensive healthcare utilization within the U.S., reflecting the notoriously high costs and complexity of the American healthcare system.

What Is Included?

The cornerstone of the Nomad Citizen membership is its income protection benefit, a feature largely absent from traditional financial markets. Conventional disability insurance and income protection schemes typically require a fixed employer, a permanent domestic address, and formal residency within a specific country, rendering cross-border freelancers and sole traders uninsurable through standard domestic channels.

Nomad Citizen: A New Social Safety Net for Entrepreneurs

Under the Nomad Citizen plan, if a remote worker or freelancer experiences an interruption in earnings—whether through a layoff, drying up client contracts, or a medical condition preventing them from working—the policy pays up to $4,000 per month for a duration of three to six months to help them stabilize their finances.

In addition to income protection, the plan includes up to $1.5 million in annual health insurance coverage. This comprehensive medical component handles inpatient and outpatient care, prescription drugs, dental, vision, mental health services, maternity care, preventive treatments, and wellness therapies, matching the robustness of domestic health insurance rather than merely offering emergency-only travel protection.

The travel coverage component addresses standard travel disruptions, including trip delays and cancellations, stolen electronics, lost luggage, emergency medical evacuations, robbery, and family visits during hospitalizations.

For growing families, the plan incorporates parental leave benefits. Members who have a baby or become the legal guardian of a child receive $4,000 per month to enable them to take time off work without financial distress, subject to a three-year waiting period to access the benefit.

For long-term or permanent catastrophic events—such as losing eyesight, being diagnosed with cancer, suffering a major stroke, or losing the ability to independently perform basic daily tasks like walking, dressing, or eating—the plan provides long-term disability payouts of $4,000 per month up to age 75.

To ease administrative burdens, the membership also integrates visa assistance directly into its mobile application. Members can browse and apply for various governments’ long-term nomad visas within the app interface. SafetyWing handles direct communication with government agencies and quality-checks applications before submission to improve approval rates.

Furthermore, members gain access to the Nomad Care Map, a curated database of more than 4,000 healthcare providers worldwide featuring user ratings for service quality and English proficiency. Financial transactions are streamlined through the SafetyWing card, a worldwide prepaid debit card sent to all members. The card can be used to pay for covered medical services up to $500, automatically generating a paid claim and eliminating out-of-pocket expenses and waiting periods for reimbursement. All policy management, provider searches, visa assistance, and 24/7 live human customer support are consolidated into a single application.

Making Claims

The claims process is designed to unify what is typically a fragmented administrative burden. For healthcare services, members can either pay out of pocket and submit documentation for reimbursement or contact the 24/7 support team to coordinate direct payment with the medical provider. Travel insurance claims require standard documentation such as police reports, carrier delay notices, and receipts. For income protection claims, SafetyWing collaborates with the member to verify the loss of revenue and confirm that the individual is actively seeking new income streams. All claims and documentation are processed through the centralized mobile application.

By addressing the vulnerabilities inherent in a mobile lifestyle, Nomad Citizen offers a structural safety net for solopreneurs and digital nomads navigating the uncertainties of working independently across international borders.
