Beyond Yoga Eyes Permanent New York City Flagships Following Success of Flatiron District Pop-Up

As the retail landscape continues to evolve, brands are increasingly looking beyond traditional permanent leases to test new waters, engage directly with their core communities, and build lasting customer relationships. For Beyond Yoga, the strategy of using temporary brick-and-mortar storefronts to feel out high-demand urban markets has proven exceptionally fruitful. Chief Executive Officer Nancy Green has made it clear that while the brand’s current footprint in New York City is temporary, a permanent home in the bustling metropolis is all but guaranteed.

When asked about the rationale behind choosing a pop-up format rather than locking into a permanent New York location for the brand’s latest retail venture, Green offered a straightforward explanation. The temporary space, which debuted in September and is slated to remain open through January, serves as an invaluable diagnostic tool for the growing athleisure label.

"Oh we will," Green said when asked if the brand intends to plant permanent roots in the city. "It’s a great way to explore and to learn and sort of test out the area. But yes, eventually we will have a permanent home."

While corporate leadership is keeping specific performance metrics under wraps for the time being, Green expressed satisfaction with the trajectory of the temporary New York outpost. The brand has been met with warmly positive feedback from shoppers who have eagerly visited the store since its doors opened in the autumn.

A Sensory Evolution in the Flatiron District

Situated in the heart of New York’s vibrant Flatiron District, the current retail space builds directly upon the groundwork laid by Beyond Yoga’s 2024 pop-up shop, which was also housed in the immediate neighborhood. However, while that initial foray into New York retail leaned heavily into community-building and experiential programming, the latest iteration offers a much more comprehensive, built-in shopping journey. Alongside extensive apparel displays, the new location features a dedicated studio space capable of hosting a wide array of fitness classes, wellness sessions, and high-profile brand activations.

These activations have already begun turning heads among New Yorkers. Most notably, the store hosted an energetic "Open Air" event on a Saturday, bringing locals together for a community-led run followed by a live performance by pop artist Natasha Bedingfield. This type of dynamic, experiential marketing embodies what Green describes as "owning joy" and "celebrating progress over perfection," a philosophy that fundamentally separates the brand from many of its industry competitors.

"A lot of people and players in this space are emphasizing performance and high performance," Green noted. "We’re not about that. We’re about actually enjoying the experience. I think that joy is very, very important and needed right now in the world."

While this perspective functions effectively as a core brand platform, it is far from a mere marketing slogan. The emphasis on positivity and community translates seamlessly into the physical design and operational strategy of Beyond Yoga’s retail footprint.

It Was All Yellow

Across its expanding collection of 20 brick-and-mortar locations—which currently includes the seasonal New York pop-up shop—Beyond Yoga maintains a distinct visual signature that is impossible to miss. By and large, the stores are yellow. Sometimes the hue blankets the exterior facade, sometimes it illuminates the interior design, and often it envelops both.

"We activate through color, and we have a very unique point of view on color, and that is part of the joy," Green explained, illuminating the deliberate design choice. "Yellow is a joyful color."

Beyond aesthetics, the physical stores are engineered to serve as hubs deeply embedded within the local communities they inhabit. This community integration involves forging partnerships with neighborhood fitness groups, a tactic that not only lends organic credibility to Beyond Yoga’s apparel offerings but also aligns authentically with the brand’s overarching mission to champion an active, healthy lifestyle.

"We create a really important experience I think, that is very human and inclusive and fun and joyful," Green said. "The brand is very much about joy, so you can feel that in the store."

Above all else, these storefronts act as an essential bridge, giving digital-first consumers a tangible method to interact with Beyond Yoga face-to-face. Because New York City ranks as one of Beyond Yoga’s most robust e-commerce markets, the pop-up location was a natural choice, featuring a curated product assortment carefully tailored to the distinct tastes and lifestyle needs of local urban shoppers.

Data-Driven Expansion and Ecosystem Building

The demand for the brand within New York has been palpable ever since the 2024 pop-up made its debut, cementing executive confidence that a permanent presence is necessary.

"We know we need a permanent home in New York, probably more than one," Green said.

This calculated approach to real estate mirrors the historical expansion of the brand. Beyond Yoga first established its retail presence in Santa Monica, California, before steadily scaling across the rest of the state and the broader West Coast. As a Los Angeles-born enterprise, those foundational retail decisions placed storefronts directly where the densest clusters of loyal customers already lived and shopped.

In the years since those early days, Beyond Yoga has refined its real estate strategy, relying heavily on data analytics to pinpoint high-density e-commerce markets ripe for physical expansion. This data-backed methodology guided the brand’s strategic leap to the East Coast roughly a year ago—an expansion that Green confirms has yielded overwhelmingly positive results. Like many modern omnichannel retailers, Beyond Yoga has consistently observed a noticeable lift in online sales within specific geographic markets immediately following the opening of a physical store.

"You’re creating an ecosystem, a customer ecosystem, and many of these markets, we also have wholesale—whether it’s through studios or some of our larger accounts—and so they all support each other," Green said.

For Beyond Yoga, the wholesale channel functions as a vital discovery mechanism, introducing the brand to new demographics. It also serves customers in regions where the company may never establish a dedicated corporate storefront. However, when it comes to the brand’s own brick-and-mortar shops, the primary objective remains catering directly to an established base of e-commerce shoppers by delivering a premium, high-touch in-person experience.

Looking ahead, Green envisions a much wider physical footprint for the company as awareness continues to climb and consumer demand scales upward.

"This brand can have many stores. It’s a premium brand, needs to be in the top markets where the customer is shopping," Green concluded. "Every year we’re growing, and so the markets that today might not be right for a store, three years from now they might be right as the brand grows and as we build awareness."
