Lululemon Appoints Former Product Chief Tara Poseley to Board Following Settlement With Founder Chip Wilson

Lululemon is bringing back familiar leadership to help navigate its next chapter, appointing former product chief Tara Poseley to its board of directors. Poseley, who previously served as the athletics retailer’s chief product officer from 2013 to 2015, officially joined the board, according to an announcement from the company.

Her appointment marks a significant milestone in the implementation of Lululemon’s settlement agreement with company founder Chip Wilson. The truce follows a prolonged and highly public battle over the strategic direction and leadership of the athletic apparel brand. Under the terms of the cooperation agreement reached earlier this year, Wilson was granted the right to add two members to Lululemon’s board—specifically former ESPN Chief Marketing Officer Laura Gentile and former On co-CEO Marc Maurer. In addition, the settlement stipulated that Lululemon was required to name a director possessing deep apparel product and brand expertise. With Poseley’s appointment, the company has fulfilled that crucial requirement.

Poseley steps into her new role with more than three decades of extensive retail and apparel industry experience. Beyond her foundational tenure at Lululemon during a period of significant growth, her impressive resume includes high-profile leadership positions at prominent consumer brands. Most recently, she served as the chief executive officer of Paula’s Choice Skincare, guiding the brand through its own competitive landscape. Her extensive retail background also features significant executive experience at major retail institutions such as Kmart and Gap Inc., equipping her with a comprehensive understanding of mass-market appeal, specialty retail, and product development lifecycles.

For founder Chip Wilson, the return of Poseley represents a welcome homecoming for someone who intimately knows the brand’s DNA. Expressing his approval of the selection, Wilson noted in a statement that Tara brings deep product expertise and understands precisely what makes Lululemon special in a crowded and competitive athleticwear market.

Lululemon’s executive leadership has similarly embraced the addition, viewing Poseley’s return as a vital asset for the company’s future trajectory. CEO Heidi O’Neill echoed those sentiments, emphasizing that Poseley will play a crucial role in strengthening the brand’s product innovation capabilities and sharpening its overall brand strategy.

O’Neill, who stepped into the chief executive role a little over a month ago, highlighted the importance of aligning governance and operational focus as the company charts its path forward. Her insights and guidance will be invaluable as we put product, design, and innovation at the center of how we operate to deliver on the company’s next chapter of success, O’Neill noted in her statement.

The integration of Poseley into the board coincides with a broader, aggressive internal realignment initiated by O’Neill to revitalize Lululemon’s core offerings. Just weeks into her tenure, the chief executive executed a sweeping overhaul of the retailer’s C-suite. As part of this major structural shift, Athleta CEO Maggie Gauger was appointed to oversee the entirety of Lululemon’s product division. Under her expanded portfolio, Gauger assumes control over merchandising, design, and product innovation.

Industry analysts have observed that this decisive leadership restructuring is squarely aimed at reprioritizing design at a time when consumer preferences in the athleisure market are shifting rapidly. While the executive shakeup signals a clear commitment to returning design and product innovation to the forefront of the company’s operational strategy, market observers have also pointed out that certain foundational positions—such as the role of creative director—remain unchanged, leaving room for ongoing evolution in how the brand executes its creative vision moving forward.
