Crypto giant Binance hit by hack suspected to be largest in history

The world’s largest digital asset exchange revealed that while swift collaborative action across the industry has successfully frozen roughly half of the impacted funds, a massive sum remains under the direct control of the perpetrators. Seeking to reassure its global clientele amidst widespread market uncertainty, Binance committed to fully covering all financial losses resulting from the massive incident.

Initial technical assessments conducted by the exchange indicate that the security breach may have originated from a compromised laptop belonging to one of its engineers. According to details released by Binance, the compromised device enabled an unauthorized attacker to gain high-level access and execute a series of illicit, large-scale withdrawals before security protocols could intervene to halt the intrusion.

In the hours following the disclosure, two leading blockchain analytics organizations publicly attributed the high-profile cyberattack to TraderTraitor, a specialized state-sponsored hacking collective operating on behalf of North Korea.

AI-powered threat intelligence firm TRM Labs published an investigation detailing how key technical indicators and operational patterns of the Binance breach bear striking similarities to previous high-value cyber exploits linked to North Korean state operatives. Conspicuously, the firm noted similarities to a record-setting $1.5 billion hack suffered by the Bybit cryptocurrency exchange in 2025—an attack that previously held the title of the largest cryptocurrency theft prior to the Binance incident.

Commenting on the sheer magnitude of the breach, Ari Redbord, global head of policy at TRM Labs, characterized the attack as a pivotal "watershed moment" for the digital asset industry. Redbord emphasized that the scale and execution of the Binance exploit are fundamentally unlike anything the global cryptocurrency market has ever encountered.

He further cautioned that because the cybercriminals continue to retain control over an immense volume of stolen digital tokens, international efforts to trace, track, and ultimately recover the missing capital remain in their early stages and face a prolonged, complex road ahead.

Chainalysis, another prominent cryptocurrency intelligence and tracking company, similarly confirmed that it maintains "high confidence" regarding the involvement of the North Korean threat group in the breach.

For several years, North Korea-backed cyber operatives have systematically focused their efforts on attacking cryptocurrency exchanges, decentralised finance protocols, and digital asset institutions. Western security and intelligence agencies have repeatedly reported that illicit proceeds generated from these large-scale digital token thefts are directly funneled into funding North Korea’s nuclear weapons and ballistic missile development programs. For its part, the regime in Pyongyang has routinely denied any involvement in international cyberattacks or cryptocurrency thefts.

Highlighting the systemic risks posed by such state-aligned threat actors, Eric Jardine, Head of Research at Chainalysis, urged cryptocurrency trading platforms worldwide to heighten their defense mechanisms and maintain extreme operational vigilance. Jardine emphasized that major trading platforms represent exceptionally high-value targets for sophisticated cybercriminals due to the immense concentration of liquid wealth stored within their ecosystems.

When asked to address queries regarding the potential involvement of North Korean state actors, Binance did not directly comment on the specific attribution findings. However, a spokesperson for the exchange stated: "We are working closely with our law enforcement partners to confirm the identity of these criminals and bring them to justice."

Binance further clarified that the security breach specifically compromised Binance.com, the primary global exchange platform. By contrast, Binance.US—a distinct, significantly smaller trading platform designed specifically to provide digital asset services to residents of the United States—confirmed that its infrastructure and user funds were entirely unaffected by the security exploit.

In a series of official statements published on social media, Yi He, co-chief executive of Binance, expressed gratitude to partner organizations and asset issuers across the digital currency landscape for their rapid intervention in helping to isolate stolen funds.

Outlining the exchange’s immediate risk-mitigation measures, she reaffirmed the platform’s focus on user safety, noting: "Safety first: withdrawals are currently disabled until the environment is confirmed to be secure."

The containment effort triggered an extraordinary level of cross-industry coordination, with major stablecoin issuers taking aggressive steps to lock down stolen funds moving across various public blockchains. Two of the industry’s largest stablecoin management entities, Tether and Circle, confirmed that they had collectively frozen roughly $2.4 billion in digital assets associated with the Binance exploit.

Jeremy Allaire, chief executive officer of Circle, stated that his firm was "closely tracking reports of a potential exploit involving Binance" and confirmed that Circle had taken decisive action to freeze over $800 million in digital assets linked to the security breach. Circle is widely known as the issuer and co-creator of USDC, one of the world’s largest U.S. dollar-backed stablecoins.

Simultaneously, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed that his organization had frozen approximately $1.6 billion in assets connected to the potential Binance exchange compromise. "Protecting the industry and our partners is our main priority," Ardoino stated, speaking on behalf of the entity behind USDT, the globally dominant dollar-pegged digital token.

Additional entities across the broader financial and blockchain sectors also intervened following the disclosure. World Liberty Financial, a cryptocurrency enterprise associated with U.S. President Donald Trump and his family, announced that it had actively collaborated with its strategic partners to assist in freezing stolen funds tied to the intrusion. Meanwhile, major rival trading platform Coinbase issued a statement confirming that its operations remained completely unaffected by the security incident, noting that its security team was actively monitoring developments.

The official confirmation from Binance followed hours of intense speculation within the digital asset community. Several independent blockchain researchers and industry analysts had raised urgent flags regarding unusual, high-volume on-chain movements and potential platform vulnerabilities hours before the exchange formally published its statement acknowledging the exploit.

News of the unprecedented security breach reverberated across global financial markets, driving immediate sell-offs across major digital assets. Bitcoin, the premier cryptocurrency by market valuation, fell by more than 4% shortly after the initial security alerts spread. Other prominent digital tokens experienced steep drops as well, with both Ethereum and Solana posting sharp losses as market participants reacted to the scale of the breach.

Founded in China in 2017, Binance has grown to become the dominant global infrastructure provider in the digital asset economy, boasting an estimated registered user base of more than 300 million people across the globe. In disclosures released in 2024, the exchange reported holding more than $160 billion in assets under custody.

Throughout its rapid commercial expansion, the trading giant has been the subject of intensive regulatory scrutiny from financial authorities and government bodies around the world seeking to enforce compliance, anti-money laundering controls, and investor protection standards.

As multi-agency investigations proceed alongside international law enforcement, the digital asset sector faces one of its most severe testing moments, with billions in stolen assets still held by perpetrators and global tracing operations actively underway.
