Racing fans are treated to a bumper and bustling day of action this Friday, with high-class fixtures scheduled across multiple tracks including Ascot, Hexham, Newcastle, and Wolverhampton. The busy programme is broadcast live on Sky Sports Racing, offering punters and turf enthusiasts a compelling mix of competitive Flat racing and quality jumps action, supplemented by international meetings at Saint-Cloud and Keeneland.
From progressive stayers stepping up in class at Ascot to intriguing handicap debuts and competitive winter-code warm-ups, the afternoon promises plenty of drama across the various racecourses.
3.35 Ascot – Rapid Improver Infraad Takes on Galiyan
An excellent, highly competitive field of six runners has assembled at Ascot for the prestigious Listed Noel Murless Stakes, where the rapidly improving Infraad bids to continue his stellar winning thread.
Trained by William Haggas, the three-year-old has shown a remarkable upward trajectory through the current season. He first caught the eye when claiming a useful handicap at Goodwood before following up with an emphatic triumph in the prestigious Melrose Handicap at York. Having proven his stamina and class in deep handicap company, he now takes a natural step up into Listed grade. Given his progressive profile, he will understandably be expected to go close under the guidance of top-flight jockey Tom Marquand.
However, the William Haggas inmate will not have things all his own way. Galiyan brings some exceptionally solid credentials to the Berkshire track and matches Infraad stride-for-stride with an official rating of 106. Galiyan has been kept in very deep waters since breaking his maiden at Chester, and he certainly was not disgraced when putting in a respectable shift to finish fifth in the historic St Leger last month. His experience in top-tier staying company makes him a formidable opponent.
Looking at the rest of the contenders for the Noel Murless feature, Galilean Quality—who finished a close second in both the Melrose and a valuable contest at Haydock—rates as the clear pick of the remainder and could easily capitalize if the market leaders falter.
5.25 Wolverhampton – Handicap newcomer Enchanted Queen Faces Four Rivals
As the afternoon transitions into the evening all-weather programme, attention turns to Dunstall Park where Wolverhampton hosts the bet365 Fillies’ Handicap. This trappy renewal features an intriguing clash, headed by the partnership of trainer George Boughey and rising star jockey Billy Loughnane, who team up with handicap debutant Enchanted Queen.
The newcomer to the handicap ranks arrives following an easy victory in a novice stakes event at Kempton on his very first start for the Boughey yard. Stepping up significantly in distance, he tackles the stiff test of handicapping off an opening official rating of 84, a mark that will surely be put to the test against battle-hardened rivals.
Chief among the opposition is the Roger Varian-trained Bintaziza, who lines up under the steering of Ray Dawson. Bintaziza began her career in fine style by scoring on her first couple of outings on the all-weather surfaces, though she did suffer a minor reverse when last seen at Thirsk. Sent off as a relatively unconsidered 9-1 shot for the fiercely competitive Sandringham Handicap back in June, she has not been seen on a racecourse since that summer assignment and should have plenty more to give as she resumes her campaign.
2.48 Hexham – Moveit Like Minnie and Banderas Contest Feature
National Hunt enthusiasts are well catered for on Friday afternoon as Hexham stages a quality card, headlined by the Jewson Hexham Handicap Hurdle. A competitive field of seven runners has been declared for this feature event, topped in the weights by the Nigel and Willy Twiston-Davies-trained mare Moveit Like Minnie.
The capable mare successfully landed the eighth victory of her career when scoring at Wincanton back in March, before rounding off her previous campaign with a run down the field in a high-quality heat at Plumpton. Returning to the track here following a seasonal break, she takes her chance in a slightly lesser contest and looks well-positioned to attempt to defy topweight for a stable that has consistently been among the winners in recent weeks.
The main danger to the topweight may well come from Banderas. Successful over a two-mile trip at this very course back in May, Banderas must be feared by all if he can successfully handle a slight dip in distance under a six-pound higher mark than for his previous success. Rounding out the primary shortlist for the Hexham feature are Winds Of Winter and Double Digits, both of whom add further depth to an already fascinating jumps contest.
Best of the Rest
Beyond the headline fixtures at Ascot, Wolverhampton, and Hexham, Friday’s extensive global racing schedule features a wealth of top-tier riding talent and high-class supporting races. Star jockeys William Buick, James Doyle, Colin Keane, Tom Marquand, and Kieran Shoemark are all in action across various tracks, ensuring a high standard of race riding throughout the day.
At Ascot, the 2.25 race serves up a hot novice stakes event featuring Pink Larkspur among a select field of five runners, while the 4.10 contest at the Berkshire venue provides an excellent 0-105 handicap over the six-furlong sprint distance, with Wiltshire, Pilu, Far Above Dream, and Fandom all lining up to do battle. Earlier on the card, the 3.00 classified stakes features Drymee and Hygge, the latter trained by the legendary National Hunt and Flat handler Gordon Elliott, ensuring strong betting interest.
Up north at Newcastle, the 5.45 card presents a fair fillies’ novice event where Always Sunny and Noozhaa immediately catch the eye. Notably, Noozhaa arrives with strong pedigree notes as a half-sister to the exciting Meydaan.
On the international front, racing purists can look toward France and the United States for elite action. Saint-Cloud hosts a high-value card featuring an eight-runner Group Three contest, alongside a quartet of Listed races, including the 3.38 event where retained star jockey Osin Murphy takes the ride aboard Zgharta. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, Keeneland’s evening fixture features the Grade One Darley Alcibiades Stakes at 10.16, bringing together a stellar field of eight high-class runners including Emphatic and Summer Starlet in a battle for North American juvenile supremacy.
