The Canaries found themselves on the wrong end of a seven-goal scoreline for the second consecutive weekend, echoing the frustration of their identical 4-3 defeat away at Middlesbrough just seven days prior. Saturday’s encounter at Carrow Road was a chaotic, end-to-end affair that saw both sides trade goals at a blistering pace. Ultimately, it was Bolton substitute Atsuki Ito who had the decisive say, netting midway through the second period to secure a famous victory for the visitors on their travels.
For long stretches, the match played out at a breathless tempo. A chaotic first half saw Norwich pegged back twice after taking a very early initiative through their very first attack of the afternoon inside the fifth minute.
Andre Brooks orchestrated the game’s opening breakthrough with sharp vision, slipping a precise pass into Mo Toure through the inside-right channel. The in-form Australian striker, brimming with confidence, seized the moment and fired home in spectacular fashion from just outside the penalty area. His first-time effort flew past Bolton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu with such velocity that the custodian had virtually no chance to react, sending the home supporters into raptures and giving the hosts the ideal start.
However, Bolton demonstrated immense resilience and were level within three minutes through another expertly crafted goal. Thierry Gale showed clever footwork, cutting sharply inside from the left flank before beating Norwich goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic at his near post with a precise, low finish that caught the defense off guard.
The frantic opening quarter of an hour continued to swing wildly. Toure thought he had restored Norwich’s advantage shortly after, only to see a subsequent effort correctly ruled out by a clear-cut offside decision. Worse was to follow for the home side and their star forward: just fifteen minutes into the match, Toure’s afternoon was abruptly cut short when he sustained a painful arm injury after falling awkwardly in a challenge. Forced into an early tactical change, the Canaries had to regroup quickly.
Norwich successfully regained their lead in the 19th minute. A deep, inviting corner from Oscar Schwartau caused panic in the Bolton penalty area, and centre-half Ruairi McConville rose highest to power a header off the upright and into the back of the net. It marked McConville’s first-ever goal in Norwich colours, a landmark moment for the defender that restored the home side’s narrow advantage.
Despite falling behind for a second time, the Trotters continued to pose a severe threat going forward. Steven Schumacher’s side played with ambition and created several decent openings, missing a couple of gilt-edged chances before their sustained pressure finally told just before the interval.
In the 42nd minute, Norwich made a costly error when they made a hash of playing the ball out from the back under pressure. Bolton pounced immediately, allowing Max Conway to drill in a dangerous low cross. The ball eventually fell invitingly to Gaizka Larrazabal, who unleashed a brilliantly struck, thunderous half-volley from some 20 yards out that flew past Kovacevic into the net, capping off a brilliant team move and leveling the scoreline at 2-2 just before the halftime whistle.
The second half began with barely any time for the crowd to catch their breath, and Bolton stunned the home faithful by surging ahead for the very first time less than two minutes after the interval. A neat, fluid attacking sequence down the right flank culminated in Kyliane Dong slipping a clever pass through to Sam Dalby. Dalby kept his composure brilliantly, producing a delicate, neat chipped finish over the advancing Kovacevic to turn the match completely on its head.
True to the character of the entire afternoon, there was no letting up in the entertainment value, and Norwich clawed their way back on level terms in the 61st minute. Philippe Clement turned to his bench, and substitute Paris Maghoma made an immediate, electrifying impact. Maghoma swept the ball out wide with a sweeping pass to the fast-breaking Jack Stacey, who burst purposefully into the area before driving a fierce shot home via the far post, making it 3-3 and igniting hope of a home comeback.
Kovacevic was soon called into action at the other end, making a crucial, sharp reaction stop to deny Larrazabal from instantly restoring Bolton’s lead. Yet, the reprieve for the Norwich defense was only temporary, and the visitors did not have to wait much longer to find their fourth and final goal of the afternoon.
With 72 minutes on the clock, substitute Atsuki Ito—who had only just been introduced to the fray by the Bolton bench—showed wonderful individual skill. He wriggled his way expertly through a static central pairing in the home defense before keeping his cool to pick out the bottom corner, leaving Kovacevic helpless and restoring Bolton’s one-goal cushion.
Despite late efforts from the hosts to find a third equalizer of the afternoon, Bolton managed the remainder of the match professionally, locking down their defense and seeing out the remainder of the contest to claim all three points.
