Rent the Runway has elevated Chief Commercial Officer Paige Thomas to the position of Chief Executive Officer, effective Monday, marking the latest leadership transition for the prominent apparel rental platform. Thomas is part of a growing cohort of seasoned retail executives hailing from Nordstrom who have taken the reins at the company, including interim CEO Teri Bariquit. Thomas officially joined Rent the Runway earlier this year in June, quickly establishing herself within the executive ranks before stepping into the top leadership role.
With a retail career spanning multiple decades, Thomas brings deep industry experience to her new post. Her extensive resume includes a decade-long tenure at Nordstrom, which notably featured five years leading Nordstrom Rack as president. Prior to her time at Nordstrom, Thomas served as the chief merchant and product innovation officer at Signet Jewelers and held the high-profile role of president and CEO at Saks Off 5TH. Her leadership background is heavily rooted in off-price retail, merchandising, and digital transformation strategies within the fashion sector.

Intriguingly, Thomas’s professional history intersects with Rent the Runway long before her arrival at the company earlier this year. Four years ago, during her executive tenure at Saks, the off-price retail business forged a strategic partnership with Rent the Runway. Through that collaborative program, shoppers were given the unique opportunity to purchase once-rented designer apparel directly from the Saks Off 5th website. However, that digital storefront was ultimately shuttered earlier this year when Saks Off 5th’s e-commerce operations were forced into liquidation. The shutdown occurred amidst a broader corporate restructuring following the bankruptcy filing of its parent company, Saks Global, which has faced a year of intense financial and operational struggles.
The relationship between Rent the Runway and traditional retail giants extends further back into the digital commerce landscape. Nordstrom Rack similarly initiated a partnership with Rent the Runway in 2020, offering select used garments from the rental platform’s inventory for purchase through its retail channels. These early collaborations underscore Thomas’s long-standing familiarity with Rent the Runway’s inventory model, sustainability-driven resale initiatives, and circular fashion philosophy.
Thomas steps into the CEO role to replace Teri Bariquit, who had been serving as Rent the Runway’s interim CEO since May following the departure of co-founder and former CEO Jennifer Hyman. Bariquit, who previously served as Nordstrom’s chief merchant, provided steady interim leadership during a critical transitional period for the rental company. Following the appointment of Thomas, Bariquit will transition into a new leadership capacity, having been appointed non-executive board chair. In this new role, she replaces Dhiren Fonseca, who is stepping down from his position as executive chairman but will remain on the board of directors as a continuing director.

The announcement of Thomas’s promotion to chief executive was made public alongside Rent the Runway’s second-quarter financial results, which painted a picture of positive sales growth paired with significantly narrowed net losses. The financial report offered investors a glimpse into the operational adjustments taking place behind the scenes as the company works to stabilize its business model and chart a path toward long-term profitability.
According to the Q2 financial disclosures, Rent the Runway’s total revenue experienced a strong upward trajectory, rising nearly 21% year over year to reach $97.7 million. At the same time, the company reported that its base of active subscribers declined by nearly 4% compared to the same period in the previous year, settling at 140,826 active users. Despite the dip in active subscriber counts, the company made notable strides in its financial efficiency and margin performance. Gross margin expanded dramatically by 610 basis points, climbing to 36.1%. Furthermore, the company’s bottom-line performance improved markedly, with its net loss shrinking by more than 50% year over year to land at $12.9 million for the quarter.
Industry analysts and company executives alike suggest that these leadership transitions and shifting metrics are unlikely to disrupt the fundamental strategic course that the company has charted for the near future. In an official statement accompanying the earnings release, Bariquit reflected on the strategic focus that defined her tenure as interim chief executive. She noted that during the second quarter, the company successfully concentrated its corporate resources and capital on its core rental offerings, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for a comprehensive 2027 strategic plan specifically centered on a broader transformation of the business.

In her own statement regarding her appointment, Thomas emphasized continuity, operational excellence, and the execution of ongoing business strategies rather than a radical corporate pivot. She articulated that her incoming approach is not indicative of an entirely new direction for the enterprise, but rather serves as a direct acceleration of the strong foundation that the leadership team has collectively built over the past several months.
