Severe Weather Halts Play at Butterfield Bermuda Championship With Smotherman and Power Tied Atop Leaderboard

Heavy rain and treacherous high winds forced tournament officials to postpone Sunday’s final-round action at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship, bringing a temporary halt to what had shaped up to be an intensely competitive conclusion at the Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton.

Tournament organizers made the call after morning weather conditions deteriorated rapidly across the venue. Destructive wind gusts topping 40 mph swept across the coastal layout on Sunday morning, making fair play virtually impossible and creating unsafe conditions for players, caddies, officials, and spectators alike. With the greens and fairways exposed to the elements and the integrity of the tournament compromised by the wind and persistent downpours, the PGA Tour had no choice but to bring the competition to a standstill.

"With no improvement to the current weather conditions and anticipated further deterioration, there will be no play today," the PGA Tour stated in an official announcement released to media and fans.

Final round postponed in Bermuda with Monday finish up in air

The outlook for the immediate future remains precarious. With meteorological forecasts predicting that the hostile weather pattern will linger, conditions are not expected to show significant improvement on Monday. In light of the ongoing forecast challenges, tournament officials announced that a formal decision regarding how and when the remainder of the tournament will be conducted—and whether the event can successfully reach its conclusion—will be finalized and communicated no later than 4 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Before the weather intervened and brought the championship to a standstill, the tournament had delivered thrilling competition through the first 54 holes. At the center of the leaderboard are Austin Smotherman and Ireland’s Seamus Power, who share the lead at 16-under-par 197 after three complete rounds of golf.

Smotherman enters the final stretch riding a wave of strong momentum and career-best form. He captured his first-ever PGA Tour title earlier this month at the Bank of Utah Championship, proving his capability to close out a victory under pressure. Alongside him at the top is Seamus Power, an established and formidable competitor on the international stage who is looking to add another major piece of silverware to his resume. Both players navigated the challenging Port Royal layout brilliantly over the first three days, building their impressive 16-under-par aggregate totals through consistent ball-striking and composure on the greens.

However, the meteorological disruption leaves both leaders, along with the rest of the tightly packed chasing pack, in a state of suspended anticipation. As players and fans wait for updates from tournament headquarters, the primary concern remains the safety of the course and whether the weather will grant a window of opportunity to determine a champion before the week concludes. Further announcements from the PGA Tour are expected as officials continually monitor the radar and assess course conditions at Port Royal.
