SafetyWing Launches ‘Nomad Citizen’ to Fill Safety Net Gaps for Digital Nomads

For years, the modern digital nomad and location-independent entrepreneur has lived a life of professional contradiction. While enjoying the ultimate freedom of working from a laptop on a beach in Bali, a café in Paris, or an apartment in Mexico City, these borderless workers have had to navigate a patchwork of fragmented insurance policies. A typical remote business owner might hold a basic health insurance policy, a separate travel insurance plan for emergencies, and perhaps some medical evacuation coverage. Yet, despite paying into multiple systems, they remain fundamentally underinsured.

When self-employed individuals work for themselves while crossing international borders, they lack the structural corporate safety net that traditional employees take for granted. Furthermore, because they are not citizens of the countries where they temporarily reside, they are locked out of local social safety nets. If a traditional worker falls ill, loses a contract, or suffers a debilitating accident back home, state benefits or employer-sponsored disability programs usually step in. For the global solopreneur, however, a serious mishap often translates to empty bank accounts, mounting medical bills, and frantic online fundraising campaigns just to stay afloat.

Recognizing this glaring vulnerability in the modern remote workforce, the travel insurance provider SafetyWing is introducing a comprehensive solution designed to act as an all-in-one corporate benefits package for the global independent community. Known as Nomad Citizen, the newly launched annual membership aims to bridge the wide gap between emergency travel protection and traditional, home-country social security.

What is Nomad Citizen?

Nomad Citizen is structured as an annual membership program that bundles extensive health coverage, travel protection, income protection, and life insurance benefits into a single, unified plan. It is specifically tailored for location-independent entrepreneurs, freelancers, and business owners who spend more than half of the year living outside their home countries and whose lives and income naturally transcend borders.

Unlike traditional localized insurance products that tie a policyholder to a single zip code or require permanent residency, Nomad Citizen provides global coverage with virtually no residency restrictions, with the sole exception of Puerto Rico. By consolidating multiple risk categories into one offering, the program seeks to eliminate the administrative headache of juggling separate policies for health, travel, and unexpected financial downturns.

Who Can Sign Up?

The program is built with specific criteria in mind. To qualify for Nomad Citizen, applicants must be under the age of 56 and earning a minimum of $4,000 USD per month. The enrollment process is handled entirely online, allowing members to select their preferred start date, declare good health, and confirm that they will spend more than half the year outside their passport country. Additionally, members have the option to add their partners and any dependent children under the age of 18 to the plan.

Industry observers note that this product targets a very specific demographic. For instance, an entrepreneur living long-term in Southeast Asia or Latin America has no access to state-provided healthcare or unemployment safety nets. Illustrating this risk, travel advocates frequently point to real-world scenarios where remote workers suffer severe accidents abroad—such as being struck by a vehicle—and rapidly exhaust their standard travel insurance limits. Following immediate emergency treatment, these individuals often find themselves unable to work for months during rehabilitation, forcing them to rely on crowdfunding platforms for survival. Nomad Citizen is designed precisely for these high-income, independent operators living abroad who lack robust state-sponsored social services. Conversely, a remote worker residing in a country like Sweden, who already enjoys comprehensive state benefits, would find little need for such a private multi-tier bundle.

How Much Does It Cost?

Pricing for the Nomad Citizen membership varies by age bracket. For individuals enrolling on or after July 1, 2026, the monthly cost is set at $443 for members aged 18 to 39. For those in the 40 to 49 age group, the rate increases to $665 per month, while members aged 50 to 55 face a monthly premium of $875. Dependent children can be added for $143 per month, though couples on the plan are permitted to add their first child under the age of 10 at no additional cost. Subscribers can choose between monthly and annual payment schedules.

Regarding geographic coverage, the policy is truly worldwide and includes the United States. However, company representatives note that the plan’s coverage limits were not designed for extensive, long-term healthcare utilization within the United States, given the uniquely high costs associated with the American healthcare system.

What’s Included?

The scope of Nomad Citizen goes far beyond traditional travel insurance, incorporating several benefits rarely found in international commercial markets.

Nomad Citizen: A New Social Safety Net for Entrepreneurs

The income protection component stands out as one of the plan’s primary drivers. Conventional income protection or disability insurance typically requires a fixed employer, a permanent domestic address, and official residency in a designated country. Because freelancers and sole traders operating across borders do not fit this mold, they are traditionally deemed uninsurable for income loss by standard government or corporate schemes. Under Nomad Citizen, if a remote worker or freelancer experiences an income loss—whether due to layoffs, dried-up client contracts, or a medical condition preventing them from working—the plan provides up to $4,000 per month for a duration of three to six months to help them stabilize their finances.

On the medical front, the health insurance tier provides up to $1.5 million in annual coverage. This includes inpatient and outpatient care, prescription drugs, dental, vision, mental health services, maternity care, preventive medicine, and wellness therapies. Unlike standard travel insurance, which strictly covers acute medical emergencies while abroad, this health component mirrors domestic health insurance by addressing comprehensive, ongoing medical needs.

The travel coverage portion handles standard transit mishaps, including trip delays, cancellations, stolen electronics, lost luggage, emergency medical evacuations, robbery, and even provisions for family members to visit during a hospitalization.

For family planning, the policy includes a parental leave benefit. If a member has a baby or becomes the legal guardian of a child, the program provides $4,000 per month, allowing the parent to take time away from work without financial distress, subject to a three-year waiting period to access the benefit.

In the event of a catastrophic long-term disability—such as the permanent loss of eyesight, a major stroke, a cancer diagnosis, or the inability to perform basic daily functions like walking or eating independently—the plan pays out $4,000 per month until the age of 75.

To assist with the logistical hurdles of a nomadic lifestyle, members gain access to integrated visa assistance. Through the app interface, users can browse and apply for various government-sponsored digital nomad visas that permit remote work legally. SafetyWing handles direct communication with immigration authorities and quality-checks applications prior to submission to optimize approval odds.

Medical navigation is supported by the Nomad Care Map, a member-vetted database of over 4,000 healthcare providers worldwide, complete with user ratings for service quality and English proficiency. For payment convenience, members receive a worldwide prepaid debit card—the SafetyWing card—which can be used to cover eligible medical services or prescriptions up to $500. This transaction auto-generates a pre-paid claim, sparing members from out-of-pocket expenses and waiting periods for reimbursement.

All administrative functions, including claims filing, coverage management, customer care, provider searches, and visa applications, are centralized within a single mobile application. Members also retain access to 24/7 human support via live chat.

Making Claims

The claims process is structured to minimize administrative friction across different categories of coverage. For healthcare expenses, members can either pay out of pocket and subsequently file for reimbursement or coordinate with the 24/7 support team to arrange direct payment with the medical provider. Travel claims require standard documentation such as police reports, airline delay notices, and purchase receipts submitted digitally. For income protection claims, policyholders work directly with SafetyWing representatives to verify the loss of revenue and provide evidence of active efforts to secure new income, with all documentation managed through the centralized app platform.
