Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy are stepping down from their leadership roles at Warner Bros., according to an insider speaking with The Hollywood Reporter. The departure of the prominent film executives comes at a pivotal moment for the entertainment industry, coinciding with Paramount Skydance preparing to finalize its monumental $111 billion merger with Warner Bros.
The newly combined, David Ellison-owned entertainment conglomerate will operate simply under the name Skydance. With the corporate union expected to be officially finalized on October 6, major leadership shifts are taking place across the legacy studio to align with the new corporate structure. Industry sources indicate that Paramount film heads Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein are expected to step in to oversee both major movie studios following the transition. Meanwhile, as they prepare to exit their current posts, Abdy and De Luca have reportedly informed close associates that they are already engaged in discussions regarding a potential next chapter at Netflix.
A Tenure Defined by Highs, Lows, and High-Stakes Swings
De Luca and Abdy took the reins as co-heads of the Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group in 2022, steering the historic studio through a turbulent, highly competitive, and evolving cinematic landscape. Their tenure has been characterized by a series of notable financial triumphs, critical accolades, and some high-profile box office misfires.
On the commercial front, the duo celebrated massive global successes. These included the phenomenal box office performance of The Minecraft Movie, which hauled in an impressive $960 million globally, and visionary filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s genre-bending feature Sinners, which pulled in $370 million worldwide. Their leadership also coincided with significant critical recognition, highlighted by last year’s Academy Award Best Picture win for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another, alongside additional awards season victories secured by Sinners.
However, their time at the helm was equally marked by expensive theatrical misfires and challenging commercial plays. Among these difficult swings were Maggie Gyllenhaal’s ambitious project The Bride! and the Tom Cruise-starrer Digger. The latter has faced a challenging theatrical rollout, with current box office tracking pointing toward a dismal opening weekend ranging between $8 million and $15 million.
Broad Leadership Realignment Across the New Skydance Empire
The exit of De Luca and Abdy is part of a sweeping corporate reorganization as Paramount Skydance consolidates its executive ranks. Just days prior to this announcement, Cindy Holland exited her position as the streaming chief for Paramount Skydance. In the wake of her departure, longtime HBO chief Casey Bloys is expected to assume leadership over all streaming initiatives across the newly combined studio ecosystem.
Additional leadership changes announced during the same week include the appointment of Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz, who is set to come on board as co-CEO alongside David Ellison, bringing cross-industry expertise to the newly formed super studio.
The news of De Luca and Abdy’s impending departure was initially broken by Puck. As the October 6 finalization date for the Skydance-Warner Bros. merger rapidly approaches, Hollywood is closely watching to see how the studio’s creative pipeline and executive structure will evolve under the unified leadership of Ellison, Goldberg, and Greenstein.
