OpenAI Introduces Virtual Try-On Feature to ChatGPT, Deepening Push Into E-Commerce

OpenAI is expanding its capabilities to court both shoppers and retailers on its platform by introducing a new virtual try-on feature within ChatGPT. The functionality allows users to take or upload a selfie to generate images, giving them a clear preview of how clothing and accessories will look on them prior to making a purchase. When browsing applicable product listings for apparel and accessories within the AI platform, users will now encounter a dedicated "try on" button designed to seamlessly bridge the gap between digital discovery and personal visualization.

This latest feature represents a significant step forward in OpenAI’s ongoing strategy to integrate e-commerce deeply into its conversational AI ecosystem. As OpenAI continues to introduce more shopping-focused capabilities to ChatGPT, an increasing number of prominent retailers are experimenting with the platform to reach tech-forward consumers. The trend has gathered considerable momentum over the past year as major brands and marketplaces look for innovative ways to leverage generative artificial intelligence to connect with buyers.

Retailers have been steadily establishing a commercial footprint within ChatGPT and other advanced AI coprocessors. For instance, David’s Bridal set up shop on Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts for ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, enabling shoppers to sift through the retailer’s extensive assortment by silhouette on both AI platforms. Shortly after, Etsy debuted its own dedicated application on ChatGPT, bringing its vast marketplace of independent goods into conversational search. These integrations follow OpenAI’s introduction of a comprehensive shopping research feature designed to recommend and compare products dynamically based on natural language search queries.

With the rollout of the new try-on tool, OpenAI is directly catching up to product visualization features pioneered by tech giants like Google. Google has spent the last few years aggressively expanding its own suite of generative artificial intelligence visualization tools. In 2023, Google debuted its virtual try-on tool, which initially allowed consumers to virtually try on women’s tops. The following year, Google extended the feature to include dresses, and expanded the technology to shoes, cementing virtual try-ons as a core pillar of modern digital retail search experiences.

The race among technology platforms to integrate virtual try-on capabilities is driven by compelling data regarding consumer behavior and sales performance. Research indicates that companies across the retail sector are actively seeking out immersive visualization tools because they consistently drive higher sales conversion rates. Brands that have successfully implemented virtual try-on technology have seen their sales conversion rates more than double, according to a 2024 industry survey by Perfect Corp. Furthermore, the same survey revealed that more than a third of respondents—specifically 38.4%—consider virtual fitting rooms and try-on solutions to be the ideal method for recreating physical shopping experiences within an online environment.

As consumer expectations shift toward more personalized and interactive digital touchpoints, the integration of selfie-based image generation into conversational interfaces like ChatGPT highlights the changing landscape of retail technology. By enabling shoppers to visualize products directly on their own likeness without leaving the chat interface, OpenAI and participating retailers are addressing one of the fundamental hurdles of e-commerce: uncertainty regarding fit and appearance. The evolution of these tools points toward an increasingly visual and personalized future for online shopping, where conversational assistants not only recommend products but also demonstrate how they fit into the everyday lives of consumers.
