Target Upgrades myDay Store Operations App with Customizable Home Screens and AI-Backed Insights to Drive Turnaround

As Target presses forward with an expansive and multifaceted turnaround effort aimed at revitalizing its business, the mass retail giant is heavily investing in the day-to-day store experience by arming its workforce with advanced technology and newly enhanced digital capabilities.

In its latest push to streamline in-store operations, Target announced Wednesday that it has significantly upgraded its proprietary store operations application, known as myDay. The sweeping updates are designed to help employees better assess real-time inventory needs, track team availability, and leverage improved sales forecasting. The refreshed platform follows an extensive feedback-gathering initiative in which the retailer consulted store employees across 50 different locations to pinpoint persistent operational bottlenecks and identify practical areas to improve daily workflows.

The centerpiece of the recent updates is the launch of the myDay Leader View feature, a personalized and highly customizable home screen designed to highlight critical store updates, metrics, and resources. Team leaders can now tailor the application’s interface to match their specific responsibilities and daily focus areas. For instance, a manager overseeing general merchandise can easily pin specific metrics regarding shelf-stocking efficiency to their home screen, while an operations lead focused on digital fulfillment can prioritize data concerning pickup orders and curbside delivery times.

Beyond personalized dashboards, Target has integrated innovative operational functions directly into the myDay platform to optimize labor and inventory management. One of the most impactful additions is the "Scan to Divert" function, which was engineered to make inventory stocking far more seamless and intuitive for floor associates. When unboxing new shipments, employees can use the tool to instantly determine whether newly scanned products should be brought directly to the sales floor to fill empty shelves or safely diverted back to the stockroom based on current customer demand and precise shelf-space availability.

The practical impact of these operational tweaks has already proven substantial. According to data shared by the company in its official announcement, the Scan to Divert function alone has successfully contributed $25 million in measurable value. Target stated that these savings and operational efficiencies can be directly reinvested back into improving the overall guest experience and optimizing store operations across its nationwide footprint. Furthermore, the newly updated app is designed to intelligently group similar tasks together and automatically prioritize employee to-do lists based on urgency and direct business value, helping store teams focus on what matters most during peak shopping hours.

The evolution of the myDay application is far from complete. Target leadership confirmed that upcoming iterations and software rollouts for the app will introduce even more advanced capabilities, including the ability to seamlessly assign tasks to specific team members, share detailed handoff notes between shifts, and access sophisticated, AI-enabled insights to guide real-time decision-making on the sales floor.

These technological deployments arrive as Target continues to execute a broader, strategic turnaround plan under the leadership of CEO Michael Fiddelke. Over recent quarters, the company has poured considerable financial resources into modernizing its brick-and-mortar stores, executing comprehensive store remodels, and upgrading both digital fulfillment infrastructure and advanced retail technologies.

Maintaining optimal in-stock positions has remained a primary operational focus for Target’s executive leadership team as they navigate shifting consumer demand and strive to deliver a frictionless shopping experience. Ensuring that popular items are readily available on shelves has been a central theme in the company’s recent financial communications and strategic updates.

Reflecting on operational improvements during the company’s second-quarter earnings call in August, Chief Operating Officer Lisa Roath emphasized the tangible progress the retailer has made in supply chain execution and inventory availability, particularly during high-stakes retail periods. Addressing industry analysts, Roath pointed to the back-to-school shopping season as a key proof point for the company’s ongoing turnaround strategies.

"If I look at back-to-school specifically, one area of improvement that we’re really proud of is our in-stock position," Roath told analysts during the August earnings call. She noted that back-to-school shopping is a critical litmus test for retail availability, as parents and students expect to find every item on a required classroom list without having to encounter empty pegs or frustrating substitutions. "We know that’s the time of the year where if you’re a guest coming in, you want to be able to find every item on your child’s list. And this year, we were able to deliver meaningful improvements in inventory availability on all of the top items across that list."

By pairing localized employee input with sophisticated operational software like myDay, Target aims to sustain these inventory improvements while equipping its store associates with the digital tools necessary to navigate the complexities of modern retail operations. As the company rolls out forthcoming artificial intelligence features and expanded task-management capabilities in the coming months, store technology will undoubtedly remain a cornerstone of Target’s ongoing strategy to elevate its physical retail footprint and secure long-term growth.
