AI-Driven Shoppers Deliver Higher Revenue and Engagement for Brands, Adobe Data Shows

Consumers who navigate to retail websites using artificial intelligence tools are proving to be significantly more valuable than traditional shoppers, engaging with promotional offers at a higher rate and generating greater revenue per visit, according to a recent survey released by Adobe.

The findings highlight a profound shift in how modern consumers discover, evaluate, and purchase products online. As shoppers increasingly rely on artificial intelligence for product discovery, deal-hunting, and price comparisons, the data suggests that these tools are effectively shortening the traditional buyer’s journey. Consequently, brands and customer experience leaders are facing an urgent imperative to rethink their digital strategies, expanding their focus to appeal not only to human shoppers, but also to the generative AI assistants acting on their behalf.

The Rise of AI as a Critical Discovery and Referral Channel

Artificial intelligence tools now occupy a powerful position at the top of the marketing funnel, sitting directly above the traditional channels that brands have spent decades building to reach their target audiences.

According to Rebecca Wettemann, CEO and principal analyst with Valoir, this technology is transforming the digital landscape by operating simultaneously in multiple capacities. "It also behaves as a discovery channel through AI search and a referral channel through the AI chatbots themselves," Wettemann noted in an email to industry publication CX Dive. She emphasized that modern brands must evaluate whether artificial intelligence systems can accurately find, thoroughly explain, and effectively differentiate their products in a crowded digital marketplace.

Early indicators strongly suggest that current-generation AI tools are already highly proficient at sifting through vast amounts of online information to surface relevant, targeted results for shoppers. Adobe’s survey data underscores this efficiency, revealing that consumers who arrive at retail sites via AI assistance add items to their digital shopping carts at a rate 32% higher than those who reach the same sites through non-AI traffic. This substantial margin indicates that AI-referred traffic arrives with higher intent and greater readiness to make a purchase, translating into superior revenue performance per visit.

Next-Gen AI Agents Transform the Holiday Shopping Landscape

The influence of artificial intelligence on consumer behavior is poised to accelerate further with the debut of next-generation AI tools, particularly personal AI agents that are rapidly gaining traction among everyday consumers.

This technological evolution introduces an additional layer of complexity for brands preparing for the peak holiday shopping season. Recent months have seen significant product launches in this space, exemplified by Meta’s Muse personal AI agent application. The app reportedly achieved an impressive 2.8 million downloads within its first twelve days of availability, signaling a rapid appetite among consumers for autonomous or semi-autonomous shopping assistance.

At the same time, major technology platforms are deeply integrating advanced intelligence directly into consumer hardware and software ecosystems. Apple’s revamped Siri AI rollout represents another major milestone capable of shifting consumer habits, even as its advanced capabilities remain restricted to newer hardware and software configurations.

As these tools proliferate across third-party applications, web browsers, and everyday smartphones, the boundary between human-driven search and automated assistance continues to blur.

Redefining Customer Loyalty and the Consumer Relationship

This rapid acceleration in consumer adoption forces a fundamental reckoning for business leaders and customer experience architects. According to Bill Staikos, founder of Be Customer Led, brands must fundamentally redesign their approach to account for a dual-audience framework.

"Brands need to start designing for a world in which there are effectively two customers: the human and the human’s agent," Staikos told CX Dive.

For decades, retail strategies have been built around direct engagement with the individual making the final purchase decision. However, as intermediary software begins to filter options, recommend products, and potentially execute transactions on behalf of the user, the traditional dynamics of brand loyalty are shifting dramatically.

"For business leaders generally, customer loyalty is fundamentally turned on its head when your customer isn’t the entity making every decision," Staikos said. He added that navigating this new paradigm will present a difficult, complex problem for organizations striving to maintain direct connections with their buyers as automated agents increasingly mediate the relationship between brands and their consumers.
