Donald Trump Names Conservative Commentator Katie Zacharia as Next White House Press Secretary

President Donald Trump has officially selected conservative commentator and media strategist Katie Zacharia to serve as the next White House press secretary, placing a long-time political ally and fierce defender at the podium of the briefing room. Zacharia, who currently works as a senior communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group, will step into the high-profile position as the chief spokesperson for the administration. Her appointment marks a significant transition in the White House communications department, as she becomes the sixth individual to hold the crucial position of chief spokesperson across President Trump’s two presidential administrations.

The announcement was made public by President Trump in a Friday post on his Truth Social platform, where he praised Zacharia’s steadfast loyalty and long-standing involvement in his political movement. In his message, Trump described Zacharia as a loyal supporter and a devoted fan and member of his Make America Great Again movement, emphasizing that she possesses an unblemished record of support for his political vision and policy objectives. The president pointed to her prior contributions to his political efforts, noting that she played an active role in his campaigns by assisting in critical battleground states where his political operations secured key victories across seven out of seven swing states.

Expressing full confidence in her ability to handle the demanding responsibilities of the role, Trump highlighted her standing within political and media circles. He stated on social media that he is confident Katie will deliver strong results for the country as the next White House Press Secretary, asserting that she commands the respect of the media, the American public, and his administration, and predicting that she will work fantastically across all three spheres to communicate his platform effectively.

Zacharia publicly accepted the appointment through a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, framing the opportunity as a significant milestone in her career of public advocacy and political commentary. In her response, she expressed deep gratitude to the president, writing that serving President Trump and the American people at this critical 250-year mark in the nation’s history represents the honor of a lifetime. She praised Trump’s leadership, stating that he has shown America that the country can be great again and highlighting that he works tirelessly to effectuate that greatness every single day. Looking ahead to her duties at the White House briefing podium, Zacharia added that she eagerly looks forward to working directly with the White House press corps, as well as with news reporters across the country, to ensure that the administration’s record and accomplishments are broadly communicated.

The 42-year-old political strategist brings a varied background spanning legal practice, political strategy, corporate communications, and media commentary to the press secretary role. For most of her adult life, Zacharia has been an active participant in Republican politics. Her early government and campaign experience dates back to 2006, when she served as an intern for the Republican National Committee and subsequently worked within the White House Office of Political Affairs during the presidential administration of George W. Bush.

In addition to her work in party politics and government affairs, Zacharia has developed a strong public profile as a conservative media commentator. She has been a frequent fixture on major conservative television networks, including Newsmax and Fox News, regularly appearing on broadcast programs to defend Republican policy positions and articulate conservative viewpoints on national issues.

More recently, Zacharia has been deeply involved in media operations directly tied to the president’s business and communication efforts. According to her profile on LinkedIn, she has served as a senior communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group and its Truth Social platform since June. Prior to her executive communications work in the private sector, she briefly held a position within the federal government earlier this year, serving as a spokeswoman at the Department of Homeland Security from February to March.

Although her government tenure at the Department of Homeland Security lasted only two months, Zacharia later explained that her brief stay was primarily driven by family considerations rather than policy differences. She noted that the heavy strain of frequent travel between her family home in California and the federal capital in Washington, D.C., led to her departure from the agency. Despite her short time in government office at DHS, she remained a prominent, vocal, and ferocious defender of President Trump and his administration’s legislative and executive policies across external media outlets.

Throughout her media career, Zacharia has consistently demonstrated a willingness to defend the administration during highly public controversies, often employing robust rhetoric to champion President Trump’s unconventional approach to the presidency. In an interview with the BBC in June, for example, she addressed and dismissed public criticism surrounding Trump’s controversial decision to host a televised Ultimate Fighting Championship event at the White House. Pushing back against critics who questioned the appropriateness of using the executive mansion for a combat sports event, Zacharia argued that the core principles embodied by mixed martial arts fighting align directly with foundational American values. She stated that the principles of the UFC are the kind of principles that founded the Constitutional Republic, explaining that the sport is ultimately about not giving up the fight until the bitter end. She asserted in the interview that there is no better summation of the American ethos than a good UFC fight.

Zacharia has also used opinion writing to articulate her ideological convictions and critique contemporary political discourse. Earlier this year, she penned an op-ed published in the New York Post detailing an incident at her local health club where she was asked to refrain from wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat while exercising. In the published piece, Zacharia recounted her firm refusal to comply with the request, stating that she responded by asserting she would never take her Trump hat off simply to appease critics on the left. Frame-by-frame, she framed the encounter as a broader reflection of cultural and political friction, describing the experience as raw, unfiltered intolerance and arguing that the fundamental right to freedom of speech does not evaporate at the gym door.

Beyond her work in media and political communications, Zacharia holds formal legal training and experience in law. She was educated at Pepperdine University in California, where she earned her law degree. Following her legal education, she served as general counsel for Fix California, a conservative non-profit and advocacy organization focused on political engagement in the state. Fix California was founded by prominent Trump ally Ric Grenell, who currently serves as the Special Presidential Envoy for Special Missions. Zacharia’s background also includes international legal experience; in 2011, she spent nearly two years clerking at a law firm in Beijing, China, broadening her legal foundation before returning to domestic political strategy. On a personal level, Zacharia balances her high-profile career in political communications and law with her family life as a mother of four children.

In stepping into the role of White House press secretary, Zacharia fills the vacancy left by former press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who departed the White House in August. Leavitt, who has reportedly taken a media position with Fox News, left the administration with high praise from President Trump. Upon her departure, Trump commended Leavitt as one of his most trusted aides, publicly stating that she was stepping down from the demanding government post to spend more time with her family. Leavitt’s prominent standing within the administration established a high bar for her successor at the press podium.

As Zacharia prepares to assume her new responsibilities, she inherits one of the most complex, high-pressure, and visible roles in the executive branch. The position of White House press secretary extends far beyond standing before the White House press corps during daily televised briefings. The press secretary is tasked with managing often contentious relationships with members of the national and international media, coordinating overarching messaging strategies across various branches of the White House, and offering high-level communications advice directly to the president. Furthermore, the press secretary oversees a comprehensive communications office that daily processes an immense volume of media inquiries, interview requests, and press statements from news organizations around the globe.

Zacharia’s long-standing dedication to the MAGA movement, her legal background, and her extensive history as a television commentator position her to take on the briefing room at a pivotal juncture in the administration. With her background spanning campaign trail operations in crucial swing states, executive strategy at Truth Social, legal advocacy, and short-term government service, Zacharia steps into the role with the expressed goal of aggressively articulating the president’s policy agenda and delivering strong results for the administration on the national stage.
