Miley Cyrus Breaks Down in Tears During Emotional Hollywood Bowl Tribute to Late Godmother Dolly Parton

LOS ANGELES — In an evening charged with profound emotion, music, and remembrance, Miley Cyrus delivered a heartbreaking and deeply personal tribute to her late godmother, the legendary Dolly Parton, during her headlining performance at the iconic Hollywood Bowl on Friday night. The Grammy-winning artist struggled to hold back tears as she shared intimate memories of the country music icon, who passed away on August 25 at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer, before launching into a moving rendition of Parton’s timeless classic, "Jolene."

As the opening notes of the legendary track began to echo across the historic Los Angeles venue, a large photograph of Parton was projected onto the stage backdrop, instantly drawing a wave of emotional resonance from the packed audience. Cyrus took a moment to address the crowd, explaining that her decision to play the Hollywood Bowl for this special run of shows was deeply intertwined with the memory of the only time she was ever able to simply sit in the audience and enjoy a live performance by her beloved "Aunt Dolly."

Recalling that special evening, Cyrus described how she had approached Parton with a simple request: for once, she wanted to step away from the stage and experience her godmother’s artistry from the crowd, just like millions of fans around the world had done for decades.

"If she had it her way, and she was playing a show, I’d be standing right beside her in a matching costume," Cyrus told the receptive audience, reflecting on their famously close bond. "And so when I was coming to the show at the Bowl to see her, I said, you know, ‘I would love a night where I can just experience you. I can just enjoy you like the rest of the world has gotten to.’"

Cyrus shared that Parton initially responded with a simple, agreeable "Okay, Miley," though she quickly joked to the crowd that "that never means okay" when dealing with the fiercely independent and playfully mischievous country music legend.

Instead of granting Cyrus the quiet, anonymous night out in the audience she had envisioned, Parton had entirely different plans. Rather than inviting Cyrus onstage to perform alongside her as she might have expected, Parton opened the concert with a surprise cover of "The Best of Both Worlds," Cyrus’ iconic smash hit theme song from her Disney Channel days on Hannah Montana.

"All of a sudden, Dolly enters, but I hear ‘The Best of Both Worlds,’" Cyrus recalled with a bittersweet laugh through her tears. "Yeah, Dolly opened performing Hannah Montana. But that’s just not the end of that story."

Parton then proceeded to make sure everyone in the massive amphitheater knew exactly where her famous goddaughter was sitting. "And she goes, like a proud aunt, ‘I don’t know if y’all know this, but my goddaughter is Hannah Montana, and she’s actually here tonight, but she’s sitting out in her seat. She didn’t want anyone to bug her. She said she just wanted to watch the show,’" Cyrus continued, noting how the public callout completely "defeated the entire purpose of the conversation that we had just had, because absolutely no one was aware that I was at the concert until she drew an obnoxious amount of attention to it."

Despite the initial playful frustration of being put on the spot, Cyrus noted that time and perspective have allowed her to fully appreciate Parton’s unique wisdom and affectionate showmanship.

"But like so many things Dolly did, I didn’t understand at the time," Cyrus reflected, adding that she could profoundly feel her godmother’s spirit and presence surrounding her during her own Hollywood Bowl performance.

"Sitting here with you all right now, feeling her all around me, knowing that she’s right here beside me, every day, more than she could be when she was here; I feel her more now than ever," Cyrus told the emotional crowd. "Knowing that I get to share this story with you all, it makes that night very worth it. This memory is gold to me. Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could ever tear us apart, and I’m gonna see her again."

Overcome by emotion, the singer paused briefly, wiping away tears as she spoke directly to her fans. "And I can’t fucking wait because I miss her. Some of the greatest music that we have today was written, produced, performed by my Aunt Dolly, and this is one of those songs," she concluded, before launching into her powerful cover of "Jolene."

The tribute continued later in the set when Cyrus clutched a heart-shaped picture frame featuring a photograph of Parton during a poignant performance of "Wrecking Ball," noting that the track had been one of the country icon’s personal favorites among her vast catalog.

Parton’s passing on August 25 sent shockwaves through the global music community, prompting an outpouring of grief and admiration from artists across every genre. A representative announced at the time that the beloved "Queen of Country Music" had died following a brief battle with cancer. In the wake of the news, Cyrus took to social media to share her grief with her followers, posting an emotional tribute on Instagram detailing the profound impact Parton had on her life and career.

"The feeling of losing my Aunt Dolly is beyond what feels right to share," Cyrus wrote in her initial statement following Parton’s death. "I have an angel by my side. I always have. One of our last conversations was about music and metamorphosis. I will always love her and want to make her proud. My heart breaks for the world, her family and friends who will miss her deeply. We’re in this loss together and we will see her in all of the most beautiful things."

Friday night’s concert marked the first of two consecutive performances for Cyrus at the historic Hollywood Bowl, following the September 18 release of her tenth studio album, Bass Persuades. Her weekend residency concludes with her second performance on Sunday evening.
