Naomi Osaka’s Real Estate Journey: From New York Roots to High-Profile Los Angeles Properties

When tennis superstar Naomi Osaka steps off the court at major tournaments like the US Open, her whereabouts often spark curiosity among fans and real estate enthusiasts alike. Though her global career keeps her constantly on the move, the four-time Grand Slam champion’s relationship with real estate, her childhood roots, and her high-profile property portfolio reveal a fascinating trajectory that mirrors her rise to the top of the sports world.

Born in Osaka, Japan, the future tennis icon moved to New York City at the tender age of three, coinciding with the beginning of her formal tennis training. Although her family relocated to Florida just a few years later, Osaka has frequently spoken about her enduring emotional connection to the Big Apple. In a 2018 interview during her triumphant run at the US Open—where she captured her first major title by defeating childhood idol Serena Williams—Osaka reflected warmly on her early memories in New York.

"New York is very nostalgic," Osaka said at the time, residing in Fort Lauderdale. "When I come here, I always have memories of when I was a kid. Sometimes I walk down the streets I walked down when I was a little kid… Every time I come here, I’m very happy."

That breakout 2018 victory proved to be a turning point. Osaka’s star continued its meteoric ascent when she claimed the number one singles ranking by the Women’s Tennis Association in 2019. By 2020, the then 22-year-old earned a staggering $37.4 million, officially shattering the record for the highest-paid female athlete in history—a title previously held by Williams.

Demonstrating her deep ties to the city where her tennis journey began, Osaka gave back to the New York community in 2021. She served as a practical and creative advisor to help refurbish five public tennis courts in Jamaica, Queens, where she and her sister, Mari, spent countless hours practicing as children.

"As a traveling athlete, the place that always feels like home is Queens and these courts," Osaka told the New York Times at the time. "[My sister] Mari and I spent so much time here as kids, so many hours on these courts practicing, and we really feel a connection to not only the courts but the area and the community."

Despite her strong emotional ties to the East Coast, Osaka initially chose to anchor her real estate portfolio on the West Coast. Over the past several years, the tennis titan has bought and sold two distinct Los Angeles-area properties, both of which came with notable celebrity pedigrees. While her current primary living situation remains private, a look back at her past acquisitions offers a glimpse into her taste in luxury architecture.

Midcentury Beverly Hills Retreat

Osaka’s entrance into the luxury real estate market occurred in 2019, a milestone year in which she secured the Australian Open title and held the world number one ranking in women’s singles for 25 consecutive weeks—making history as the first Asian player to achieve the feat. Capitalizing on her success, she purchased a renovated midcentury modern home in Los Angeles from pop star Nick Jonas, paying $6.91 million for the property just a year after Jonas had originally acquired it.

Spanning 4,100 square feet, the gated residence was originally constructed in 1965 but underwent an extensive modernization in 2015. The single-story, flat-roofed dwelling featured five bedrooms and four-and-a-half bathrooms. Designed with seamless indoor-outdoor living in mind, expansive glass walls slid open to connect the interior living spaces directly with the lush backyard.

The outdoor grounds boasted a long, rectangular infinity swimming pool and spa, a cantilevered guesthouse, and a wooden pool deck that jutted dramatically out over the rugged mountainside. Inside, the home showcased sumptuous design details, including light oak floors, machiche wood wall paneling, and an open-plan living and dining room centered around a striking hematite fireplace. The kitchen was equally well-appointed, featuring high-end appliances, minimalist cabinetry without visible hardware, and a center island with an integrated breakfast bar. The primary suite offered direct backyard access and a deep soaking tub that framed views of a private, gated courtyard enveloped in greenery.

After three years of ownership, Osaka sold the luxurious property in 2022 to tech entrepreneur Milun Tesovic in an off-market transaction for $8.7 million. Around the time of the sale, the tennis star was spotted touring luxury condominiums in New York City, including units at Olympia, a 33-story tower in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Interestingly, that building shares a connection with another Jonas brother; Joe Jonas listed his own luxury unit in the same building for $6.75 million. It remains unconfirmed whether Osaka ultimately purchased permanent residential property in New York during those visits.

Tarzana Mansion

Shortly before parting ways with her Beverly Hills residence, Osaka acquired another substantial Los Angeles-area property, once again purchasing from familiar faces in the entertainment industry. In a transaction closed at $6.3 million, the athlete bought a sprawling Cape Cod-style mansion in Tarzana, California, previously owned by Love Is Blind hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey.

Built in 2014, the expansive residence offered 6,855 square feet of living space, comprising five bedrooms, six full bathrooms, and three half-baths. At the heart of the home was a welcoming, cream-colored kitchen outfitted with dark wood floors, top-tier stainless steel appliances, and two sprawling center islands, one of which featured an extended breakfast bar capable of seating five people. Despite its grand scale, the home maintained a warm, inviting atmosphere reminiscent of a set from a Nancy Meyers film.

Coffered ceilings drew the eye upward in the adjacent family room, which featured a traditional fireplace, custom built-in shelving, and foldaway glass doors that opened directly to resort-style grounds. The exterior amenities included a swimming pool and spa, a built-in fire pit, an outdoor barbecue kitchen, and a private basketball court. Additional interior highlights included a dedicated billiards room complete with a wet bar, a primary suite featuring vaulted ceilings, a private balcony, an indoor fireplace, and a spacious bathroom anchored by a white marble vanity. During her three-year tenure at the estate, Osaka further enhanced the property by adding a separate gym and wellness center.

The real estate circle completed a full rotation in 2025, when Osaka sold the Tarzana property back to Nick and Vanessa Lachey for $7.95 million. The Lacheys had originally sold the home to Osaka when they relocated to Honolulu for Vanessa’s role in NCIS: Hawai’i. Following the cancellation of the series after three seasons, the timing aligned with Osaka’s decision to move on from the property, allowing the celebrity couple to seamlessly reclaim their former home.
