VANCOUVER — The B.C. Lions officially secured their place in the Canadian Football League playoffs on Friday night, delivering a commanding 41-20 victory over the struggling Ottawa Redblacks at BC Place. Propelled by a sharp passing performance from quarterback Nathan Rourke and a dominant second-half rushing attack, the Lions extended their winning streak to four games while locking up a postseason spot in emphatic fashion.
Rourke was in exceptional form throughout the contest, completing 25 of his 31 pass attempts for 360 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. His efficient play anchored an offensive display for B.C. (10-6) that repeatedly responded whenever Ottawa attempted to mount a comeback. On the ground, running back Zander Horvath produced a heavy-duty effort, rushing for 89 yards on 14 carries and scoring two touchdowns. Fellow tailback James Butler provided explosive support in the backfield, accumulating 76 rushing yards and a touchdown of his own.
For the Redblacks (0-16), the loss prolonged a nightmarish campaign, marking the franchise’s 22nd consecutive defeat dating back to last season. Despite their winless record, Ottawa showed remarkable grit during the middle quarters of the game. The visitors cut B.C.’s lead down to just three points early in the third quarter, putting pressure on the home side. Ultimately, however, Ottawa was unable to sustain its momentum as the Lions pulled away convincingly in the fourth quarter.

Ottawa quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson turned in a resilient performance under constant pressure, finishing 25 for 35 on his pass attempts for 253 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. However, Bethel-Thompson was sacked four times by a relentless Lions pass rush. Ottawa kicker Paul Geelen generated much of the team’s scoring, hitting four field goals—including a 52-yard kick early in the third quarter—though a missed convert attempt early in the game proved costly.
The Lions set the tone on the very first possession of the game, taking the opening kickoff and marching swiftly down the field. Rourke orchestrated an efficient eight-play, 84-yard drive that took less than five minutes off the clock. The march was capped off when Rourke delivered a sharp pass into the end zone to Keon Hatcher Sr., who reeled in the ball directly under the uprights for B.C.’s first touchdown of the night.
B.C. expanded its advantage midway through the first quarter following another defensive stop. Taking over in Ottawa territory, the Lions advanced inside the red zone, where Horvath was called upon in a short-yardage situation. The fullback took the handoff and darted across the goal line for his first touchdown of the evening. A successful single-point convert kick from Sean Whyte gave the Lions a 14-0 lead.
Ottawa refused to go down quietly and responded on its next drive. Bethel-Thompson found Canadian running back Daniel Adeboboye with a short pass, and Adeboboye did the rest, bursting into the secondary and sprinting 18 yards into the end zone for Ottawa’s first touchdown. The Redblacks were limited to six points on the drive, however, as Geelen’s convert kick sailed wide of the uprights.
The visitors chipped away further early in the second quarter, utilizing a sustained drive to set up Geelen for a 38-yard field goal that narrowed the Lions’ lead to 14-9. B.C. answered late in the second quarter to restore a double-digit buffer. Rourke launched a deep 26-yard pass downfield to American wide receiver Stanley Berryhill. Berryhill leaped high in the air to make the catch, taking a heavy hit from Ottawa defensive back Ahmari Harvey as he came down, but managed to hold onto the ball in the end zone. Whyte added the extra point to push B.C. ahead 21-9.
The play caused a brief scare for the Lions as Berryhill remained down on the field after the hard collision. A trainer came out to evaluate the receiver, but after a few moments, Berryhill got up under his own power and walked back to the bench.
With less than a minute remaining before halftime, Ottawa seized momentum back when defensive back Alonzo Addae intercepted Rourke at midfield. The interception was a rare mistimed throw for Rourke, marking the first time the Canadian quarterback had been picked off in 131 pass attempts over a four-game stretch. The Redblacks made the most of the turnover, driving into B.C. territory before Geelen booted a 24-yard field goal as time expired, cutting the Lions’ halftime lead to 21-12.
Ottawa maintained that pressure coming out of the break. On their opening drive of the third quarter, Geelen drilled a 52-yard field goal straight through the uprights, bringing the Redblacks within six points at 21-15.

Minutes later, Ottawa’s defense delivered another big play. Rourke attempted a short pass to Hatcher near Ottawa’s 36-yard line, but defensive lineman Amani Bledsoe leveled Hatcher with a hard hit, knocking the ball loose. Bledsoe recovered the fumble from the bottom of the dog pile, giving
