Michael Douglas Confesses to Secret Romance with Kathleen Turner During ‘Romancing the Stone’ Filming

After four decades of persistent denials, Hollywood icon Michael Douglas has finally come clean about one of the industry’s worst-kept secrets, confirming that he and frequent co-star Kathleen Turner engaged in a secret romantic relationship while filming the 1984 adventure classic Romancing the Stone.

The revelation appears in a newly released, exclusive excerpt from Douglas’ forthcoming memoir, titled One Helluva Ride. The passage, published by People magazine, sheds light on a chapter of cinematic history that has fascinated film buffs and pop culture historians for generations. The undeniable on-screen chemistry between Douglas and Turner generated endless speculation from audiences and critics alike, yet both actors maintained for years that their relationship was strictly professional.

Turner, who has long laughed off persistent rumors surrounding their off-screen dynamic, offered a lighthearted and swift response to the confession. In a statement provided to People, the actress brushed off the widespread attention generated by the decades-old secret. "Good heavens what a fuss about something 40 years ago!" Turner wrote, adding with characteristic warmth, "I love Michael and I look forward to enjoying the book."

In the memoir excerpt, Douglas explains that at the time production began on Romancing the Stone, he and his then-wife, Diandra Douglas, were separated. The actor writes that they "were both having extramarital affairs" during the separation period. Amid these personal complexities, Douglas and Turner found themselves working in close quarters under intense physical and professional pressure, ultimately leading to a deep personal connection.

"The truth is that during the production of Romancing the Stone, Kathleen and I fell hard for each other and began a relationship," Douglas writes. He describes their romance as far from a fleeting distraction, noting that it "grew naturally from how closely we were working together, how much pressure we were under, how much we respected and cared for one another, and how attracted we were to each other." He adds, "Like every other guy in the world at the time, I was knocked sideways by Kathleen…"

The intense chemistry between the two actors translated seamlessly to the silver screen, captivating audiences and cementing Romancing the Stone as a major box office hit. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the romantic action-adventure comedy paired Douglas’s rugged soldier-of-fortune character, Jack Colton, with Turner’s adventurous romance novelist character, Joan Wilder. The film’s massive success led to a 1985 sequel, The Jewel of the Nile, and later a dramatic reunion in 1989’s The War of the Roses. Decades later, they even worked together on the Netflix comedy series The Kominsky Method.

Despite the undeniable spark they shared, Douglas and Turner went to extraordinary lengths to keep their relationship entirely under wraps. According to the actor, the romance was concealed so effectively that even director Robert Zemeckis and their prominent co-star Danny DeVito remained completely unaware of what was happening behind the scenes.

For forty years, the official narrative maintained by both stars was one of playful denial. They repeatedly dismissed rumors during press tours for their subsequent films and even as recently as their press rounds for The Kominsky Method.

"The chemistry I had with Kathleen Turner was so strong, audiences have been certain for years that we were in a relationship together while making the film," Douglas notes in his memoir. "We both denied it through Romancing The Stone, Jewel of the Nile, War of the Roses, and even while doing press a few years ago for The Kominsky Method."

Douglas outlines the carefully constructed narrative that both actors upheld for decades. "The official story went as follows: Yes, we confessed, we had amazing chemistry. Yes, we were both, as Kathleen said, ‘terrible flirts,’ and yes, we were both tempted, but nothing ever happened between us," Douglas writes. "That was a lie."

The two-time Oscar winner explains that the primary motivation behind the prolonged deception was the protection of his family. He maintained the secret for forty years "to protect my wife and son."

The clandestine romance ultimately came to an abrupt halt during the film’s production following an unexpected visit to the set. According to Douglas, his then-wife Diandra visited the location and "grew suspicious" of the dynamic between the leading man and his co-star. During the visit, Diandra spoke directly with Turner and "made it clear to her that we were still married."

This confrontation shifted the dynamic entirely. Douglas explains that Diandra’s interpretation of their marital separation differed significantly from his own perspective, which created immediate complications for the budding romance.

"Her view of the terms of our separation was different from mine. This gave Kathleen pause. She didn’t want to interfere," Douglas writes. "After that visit, Kathleen and I ended things, and I went back to Diandra."

With the publication of One Helluva Ride, Douglas is finally setting the record straight on a foundational chapter of his personal and professional life, lifting the veil on a Hollywood secret that has intrigued fans for forty years.
