Walmart Unveils Powerful Walmart+ and Sam’s Club Plus Bundle in Direct Challenge to Amazon Prime

Retail giant Walmart has launched a major new membership initiative, bundling its popular Walmart+ service with Sam’s Club Plus memberships to offer shoppers nearly $100 in total savings. The strategic move arrives at a crucial economic moment, designed to appeal directly to financially stressed consumers who are navigating persistent inflation, rising everyday costs, and growing anxieties regarding the broader labor market.

By combining the digital perks of Walmart+ with the wholesale bulk-buying power of Sam’s Club Plus, the retail conglomerate is offering an aggressive value proposition. The bundled offering includes comprehensive delivery options, fuel discounts, and a choice of streaming services, positioning the combined package as a formidable competitor to established retail subscription models.

This aggressive value play from Walmart comes at a time when consumers are battered by rising prices and increasingly worried about jobs, serving as the latest and perhaps most significant challenge to Amazon Prime. As household budgets tighten across the United States, retail analysts point out that the financial math of the new bundle heavily favors the consumer, particularly when compared side-by-side with rival subscription services.

“This is a direct shot at Prime,” Brett Rose, founder and CEO at wholesale distributor United National Consumer Suppliers, said by email. “$120 vs. [Amazon Prime’s] $139, and you get a warehouse club, delivery, streaming, and gas thrown in. On paper Walmart wins the value math easily.”

The rollout of the combined membership represents the latest maneuver in an escalating battle for consumer loyalty and recurring revenue between the world’s largest traditional retailer and the dominant e-commerce titan. Over recent years, Amazon has aggressively pushed into Walmart’s traditional territory by expanding faster delivery capabilities to thousands of rural communities. This expansion has required significant capital investment and logistical development, including the construction of numerous fulfillment and last-mile delivery stations in non-urban regions across the country.

Walmart is now answering back across multiple fronts, leveraging its distinct operational advantages to counter Amazon’s digital dominance. Walmart already boasts a massive, unparalleled physical presence across the United States, running thousands of traditional retail stores alongside its extensive network of warehouse clubs. The company operates 4,615 Walmart stores and over 600 Sam’s Clubs nationwide. By integrating its physical warehouse infrastructure with its digital subscriber perks and including a streaming service option, the new membership tie-up directly undermines the attractiveness of a key Amazon Prime perk that has historically kept digital shoppers locked into the Amazon ecosystem.

Furthermore, Walmart has recently enjoyed notable success in capturing higher-income shoppers and building deeper brand loyalty among demographics that traditionally shopped elsewhere. Amid an uncertain economic landscape, the dual membership could prove instrumental in locking these valuable customers into the broader Walmart ecosystem. Noting that more higher-income cohorts have become Walmart shoppers, Moody’s Ratings earlier this year picked the retailer as the biggest winner in the U.S. retail sector, attributing its success to continuous innovation supporting its value offering and best-in-class convenience.

Despite the compelling financial incentives of the new bundle, industry experts caution that consumer habits are deeply ingrained and will not shift overnight. People traditionally shop at Walmart and Amazon for different reasons, utilizing Walmart primarily for low everyday prices and immediate goods acquisition, while turning to Amazon out of habit and for digital convenience, according to Rose.

“A cheaper bundle doesn’t break that overnight and doesn’t create an imminent threat for Q4 holiday shopping,” Rose said. “Amazon has mastered lower prices and literally patented one-click buying. It’s a different shopping experience altogether.”

Another critical component of the Walmart+ value proposition is its fuel discount program, which has long been viewed as a direct challenge to warehouse rival Costco. At a time when gas prices remain stubbornly high across much of the United States, the ability to save on fuel at the pump serves as a powerful draw for budget-conscious drivers. While Amazon has largely lacked a permanent answer to this physical infrastructure benefit, the e-commerce giant did test a limited fuel discount program for Prime members around the Fourth of July holiday.

As the retail industry pivots toward the critical holiday shopping season, the timing of Walmart’s announcement highlights the urgency of securing customer commitment before discretionary spending peaks. Consumers are increasingly stretched heading into the final months of the year, making membership bundles an effective vehicle for locking in recurring revenue and fostering long-term brand loyalty.

“The timing tells you everything. Consumers are stretched heading into the holidays, and memberships lock in loyalty and recurring revenue before the spending gets decided,” Rose said. “Loyalty programs are what keep people coming back. However, not more so than lower prices.”
