OpenAI Introduces Virtual Try-On Feature to ChatGPT in Push to Capture E-Commerce Market

OpenAI is stepping up its efforts to court online shoppers and major retailers by introducing a powerful new visual capability to ChatGPT. In the latest move bridging conversational artificial intelligence and digital commerce, users of the platform can now take or upload a selfie to generate realistic images demonstrating how clothing and accessories will look on them prior to making a purchase.

Under the new update, a dedicated "try-on" button will automatically appear on product listings for qualifying apparel and accessories within ChatGPT. By clicking the prompt, consumers can visualize items directly on their own likeness, bridging the persistent gap between digital browsing and trying on merchandise in a physical store. This feature represents a significant evolution in how conversational agents handle transactional queries, shifting ChatGPT from a purely text-based research assistant into an interactive, visual virtual fitting room.

The integration is the latest in a series of calculated steps by OpenAI to establish a firm foothold in the rapidly growing ecosystem of agentic commerce and AI-driven retail. As OpenAI continues to roll out sophisticated shopping features, brands and retail giants are increasingly experimenting with the platform to reach consumers during the critical product discovery and evaluation phases of the buyer journey.

The broader push into retail began gaining serious momentum earlier this year. In April, David’s Bridal established a prominent presence on Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts for ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot. That integration empowered shoppers to seamlessly sift through the bridal retailer’s complex inventory and assortments by specific dress silhouettes across both major AI ecosystems. Just the following month, marketplace giant Etsy debuted its dedicated app directly on ChatGPT, introducing conversational AI search capabilities to millions of active users looking for unique, hand-crafted, and vintage goods.

These developments build upon foundational tools deployed by OpenAI last year, when the company officially launched a comprehensive shopping research feature designed to recommend, contrast, and compare products based on natural language search queries. By layering virtual try-on capabilities on top of these existing search and recommendation engines, OpenAI is directly challenging established technology giants that have pioneered visual AI in the retail space.

Chief among those competitors is Google, which has spent the last few years aggressively rolling out and expanding its own suite of generative artificial intelligence product visualization tools. Google initially debuted its virtual try-on tool back in 2023, giving consumers the ability to virtually try on women’s tops using advanced diffusion models that accurately depicted how fabric drapes, folds, and clings to various body shapes and sizes. The following year, Google extended that core functionality to include dresses, partnering with high-profile brands and designers like Simkhai to showcase the technology’s versatility. Last year, Google further broadened its visual shopping footprint by extending its virtual try-on capabilities to footwear, allowing users to visualize shoes from multiple angles.

OpenAI’s entry into virtual try-on highlights a broader, industry-wide race to integrate immersive visualization technologies into everyday digital shopping experiences. Long before OpenAI and Google bolstered their respective platforms with these advanced product visualization features, market research consistently demonstrated that brands across the retail spectrum were actively seeking out immersive tools to drive higher sales conversions and reduce costly product returns.

Data from a 2024 Perfect Corp. industry survey underscores the immense commercial value of virtual fitting rooms and try-on technology. According to the findings, brands and retailers that successfully implemented virtual try-on technology experienced a dramatic boost in performance, with their sales conversion rates more than doubling compared to traditional e-commerce presentation methods. Furthermore, the survey revealed that more than a third—specifically 38.4%—of consumer respondents considered virtual fitting rooms and interactive try-on experiences to be the ideal medium for successfully recreating the physical shopping experience within online retail environments.

As artificial intelligence platforms continue to evolve from novelty text generators into fully functional transactional ecosystems, the incorporation of visual try-on technology marks a crucial turning point for digital retail. By making it effortless for consumers to see products on themselves without leaving a conversational chat interface, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a central hub for modern discovery, research, and purchase execution.
